Over the years, J.K. Rowling has built a reputation for her public statements on gender and inclusion that have sparked significant debate and created divisions within the Harry Potter fan community all over the world. The controversy has led to the rise of the ongoing “art vs artist” debate, which attempts to find a way to celebrate the legacy of the books while keeping the disagreement on the writer’s views on the other side.

The debate has found a new contributor in Andrew Garfield, who gives his two cents on what the approach should be regarding the Harry Potter legacy.

Andrew Garfield has expressed his complex opinions about the Harry Potter series, criticizing the author of the Harry Potter books, J.K. Rowling, but applauding the films' artistic merits. The Amazing Spider-Man star recently saw the Harry Potter films for the first time and shared his thoughts on Hits Radio's My Life in Movies series.

“Those Harry Potter movies are really good! I know it’s controversial and we shouldn’t be putting money in the pocket of inhumane legislation right now, through she that will remain nameless.” The actor appeared to be alluding to Rowling's contributions and donations to groups like For Women Scotland, which have been widely criticized for their staunch opposition to the advancement of transgender rights.

“I hadn’t watched the Harry Potters until recently. And he’s really good in those Harry Potter movies!” Garfield added, referring to Daniel Radcliffe's performance through the films.

The actor went on to praise the movies and the commendable efforts of the cast, crew, and artisans involved in their making. His subtle and discreet remarks on J.K. Rowling, however, did not malign the good name of Harry Potter but were enough to put across his disagreement.

Andrew Garfield's remarks about J.K. Rowling and the movies coincide with increased criticism of the actors participating in the upcoming HBO Harry Potter revival.

The new Harry Potter cast under the lens of intense scrutiny

One of the most prominent of the new cast members of HBO's Harry Potter series to be sifted for accepting a role in the series is John Lithgow, who plays Albus Dumbledore in the adaptation. His Jimpa castmate, Aud Mason-Hyde, who plays his non-binary grandchild in the queer family drama, acknowledged that they find it unsettling that he accepted the part.

“I don’t think it’s worth speaking to John’s reasoning by any means, but I do also think that it’s a strange decision,” Mason-Hyde told Out magazine. Even though they acknowledged that Lithgow's reasoning,  they still cannot seem to understand the reasoning behind his decision.

Lithgow, on the other hand, defended his participation, pointing out that he has never met Rowling and that, given the inclusive themes of the Harry Potter universe, he finds her opinions conflicting and puzzling. He is not the only one, however, seeing as how Andrew Garfield found the themes of the movies to be agreeable as well, but the personal views of the writer are something he has a problem with.

Nevertheless, amid J.K. Rowling's controversy and casting backlashes, Garfield’s remarks might come as a breath of fresh air for Potterheads.
