Andrew Garfield became emotional as he lovingly remembered his mother. The actor went through one of the most devastating periods of his life when his mother, Lynn Garfield, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. After battling the disease, she passed away in 2019.
While caring for his mother during the final days of her life, the actor learned much about grief and love. The experience also helped him better understand who his mother truly was. As he reflected on that period, Garfield once again remembered his mother while speaking about one of her most innate qualities.
Andrew Garfeild fondly remembers his mother
Andrew Garfield has often spoken about his mother and the impact she had on his life. During a recent interview on The Spiritual Life podcast, the actor sat down with Fr. James Martin, S.J., for a conversation. When asked about his upbringing, Garfield recalled his mother and became emotional as he remembered her innate ability to love and care.
"She was someone who just innately could love people, tend to people, and care for people. Not only people, animals, plants, trees, nature itself," he said.
"She was someone who was so concentrated and tuned in to the small miracles of all life. Very Jesuit. Very, very Jesuit. And it was very natural for her. I must have just absorbed that like osmosis. And I'm so grateful.”

In a previous interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Garfield revealed that even while in her hospice bed, his mother was more concerned about the nurses than her own pain. He has also often spoken about how she encouraged him to pursue a career in acting.
Later, the actor showed pain and healing in We Live in Time, a film that was particularly close and personal to him.
