Some movies make a buzz before they even arrive in theaters, and one such movie is Andrew Garfield’s upcoming film Artificial. Luca Guadagnino’s film garnered immense traction, though much of it has focused on the controversy surrounding its distribution. Amazon unexpectedly dropped the movie, raising several questions about the project's future.

The situation became more complicated when several major studios reportedly passed on the film. Artificial eventually found a new home with Neon. While the chatter around the movie continues, Garfield has finally spoken about the project for the first time.

Andrew Garfield was in attendance at the New York premiere of his movie, The Magic Faraway Tree. While speaking about his upcoming movie, Artificial, the actor mentioned Amazon and expressed his gratitude to the company for developing the film and helping it find a new home after the unexpected decision. He also shared a few words about the movie’s new home, Neon.

“This business is in an interesting place, and I’m fascinated by how things work,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. 

“I think it’s (Neon) a really good fit and I’m really excited to release it with them,” he added and called Neon “a daring studio doing daring films so I’m very, very excited to be partnering with them on it.”

This comes after Amazon announced its decision to drop the movie just months after signing a deal with OpenAI. Following the unexpected move, several major studios, including Warner Bros., Netflix, and Focus reportedly rejected the film, as per The Hollywood Reporter. Ultimately, Neon stepped in to acquire the film.

There has been plenty of speculation surrounding the plot of Andrew Garfield’s Artificial. As per Deadline, the film follows the chief executive officer of OpenAI, Sam Altman, in 2023, when he was unexpectedly fired from OpenAI before being reinstated. The film has already garnered divided reactions following its early screenings.

As per World of Reel, some viewers found Artificial thought-provoking, while others felt its slow pace worked against it. With such contrasting early reactions, the film’s reception can be difficult to predict. Artificial is expected to premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where it could give a clearer idea of whether the film lives up to the growing buzz surrounding it.
