C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia has enchanted generations of readers with its magical worlds, mythical creatures, and timeless battle between good and evil. He built Narnia on talking animals, enchanted forests, and a wardrobe that opened the door to another world. Greta Gerwig, however, is taking a different route into the beloved fantasy universe, and her first look at Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew has fans wondering whether this trip to Narnia is heading in the right direction.
The trailer opens with Daniel Craig’s Uncle Andrew suggesting that one story can be the beginning of many others. Soon, young Digory and Polly discover the Wood Between the Worlds, travelling through magical realms and encountering fantastical creatures along the way. Emma Mackey appears as Jadis, the future White Witch, while the footage offers glimpses of Narnia’s creation.
But one creative choice has particularly divided viewers: the use of Led Zeppelin’s iconic 'Stairway to Heaven' as the trailer’s musical backdrop. While the rock anthem lends the footage an epic quality, some fans feel the choice clashes with the wonder and atmosphere they associate with Lewis’ world.

Gerwig’s adaptation is the first-ever screen version of The Magician’s Nephew, the 1955 novel that explores the origins of Narnia. The film stars newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell as Digory and Polly, alongside Mackey, Craig, Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough, Susan Wokoma, and Meryl Streep, who voices Aslan.
The movie is set to arrive in IMAX and theaters worldwide on February 12, 2027, before streaming on Netflix from April 2, 2027. With a filmmaker known for putting distinctive spins on familiar stories taking the reins, the adaptation has already sparked a debate over whether a fresh interpretation can coexist with the source material’s cherished identity.
But while Gerwig’s bold musical choice has become a talking point, it is the overall look and feel of this new Narnia that has fans split.
The magic of Narnia does not feel it to fans as The Magician’s Nephew's first trailer drops
The first trailer has prompted strong reactions from longtime fans, with some intrigued by Greta Gerwig’s ambitious take and others arguing that the footage feels too far removed from the world they imagined while reading Lewis’ books. The debate has quickly extended beyond the soundtrack to the film’s visual style and its interpretation of one of fantasy literature’s most beloved universes.\

"Narnia's worldbuilding has this quiet and soft familiarity to it. The different worlds that he wrote were different enough to feel magic but familiar enough to be somewhere down the road. This isn't that. This is exceedingly otherworldly, overstimulating, and quite sci-fi," said one fan. Another fan also pointed how it looks like 'Narnia becoming Marvel."

Fans have also called out Daniel Craig's casting, saying he looks more like a detective than anything else: "Magician ? I'll have you know he's a mighty fine detective." One fan has even called it "the big culture war annoyance of 2027" already.
While most of the fans seem disappointed with it, many are able to find the magic in Gerwig's new world, complementing its use of ' Stairway to Heaven', the visuals, and how it looks as something promising.
Ultimately, Gerwig’s Narnia has a long way to go before it can win over skeptical fans, especially those protective of Lewis’ legacy. Whether the full film can turn this early backlash into curiosity remains to be seen, but the first look has certainly made its arrival one of fantasy’s most debated upcoming releases.
