Amy Madigan is joining Viola Davis in Ascent, Paramount+’s corporate thriller from screenwriter John Logan. The series turns crisis management into a high-stakes profession, where reputation and leverage matter as much as money. For Madigan, whose recent work has brought her back into the awards spotlight, the role places her in a world shaped by influence rather than horror.

At the center of that corporate machinery is a mentor whose past with Catriona may matter as much as the crisis now threatening her.

Catriona Vail, played by Viola Davis, has built a career solving emergencies for billion-dollar clients with Ascent Ventures. Her pristine life is thrown into shambles when her estranged daughter is placed in danger, forcing Catriona to bring her ruthless work instincts into a family crisis. Enter Amy Madigan, who plays Rachel, a former Ascent Ventures executive and Catriona’s lifelong mentor, who gets her private life thrown into the company’s orbit because of Catriona's family emergency.

Madigan joins Sam Heughan, who plays Conal, one of Ascent Ventures’ top agents, a socially cunning chameleon who relishes completing assignments. John Logan, whose writing credits include Gladiator and Skyfall, created the series and will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Michael Aguilar, Davis and Julius Tennon also executive produce through JuVee Productions; production is scheduled to begin in Los Angeles in 2027 (via Deadline).

Her arrival also follows an awards-season breakthrough that put Madigan’s work in a very different, and much brighter, kind of spotlight.

Amy Madigan's long overdue Oscar win

Amy Madigan’s casting in Ascent follows her first Academy Award win for a horror-film performance that became an awards-season talking point that overwrote even her 1999 disagreement with the Academy. In Zach Cregger’s Weapons, she played Aunt Gladys, the eccentric relative whose unnerving presence becomes central to a story about missing children in a small community. The role brought Madigan the 2026 Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, four decades after her earlier nomination for Twice in a Lifetime.

Madigan made Gladys memorable by making her shifts in mood feel deliberate. The performance moved between familiarity and menace without a hair out of place.

Rachel is a different proposition from Gladys: she is defined by professional history and her mentorship of Catriona, rather than a horror antagonist’s overt strangeness. That gives Madigan a new setting for the measured authority and character detail she has brought to earlier roles, while Ascent’s corporate world supplies its own forms of menace.
