The movie in question is the 2016 sci-fi phenomenon Arrival, directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Amy Adams, which is one of her best roles. The movie is based on a Ted Chiang novella, which is actually a deep dive into the grief of losing a child packaged as a movie about extraterrestrial life. Despite having a relatively small budget of $47 million, the movie made over $200 million at the box office, making it a huge hit.
Arrival received praise from critics in addition to its strong box office performance. In addition to earning eight Academy Award nominations, including best film and best direction, the film now has a strong 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It also starred Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker in important roles. The highly regarded movie gave filmmaker Denis Villeneuve the opportunity to work on more ambitious science fiction films like Blade Runner 2049 and Dune. Since then, he has directed Dune: Part Two and is getting ready for Dune: Part Three to be released later this year. After that, Villeneuve will direct the James Bond revival for Amazon.
