Caro Claire Burke’s Yesteryear has become one of the year’s most debated books, attracting attention for its sharp satire and divisive themes across publishing and online culture. The novel follows Natalie, an influencer devoted to traditional domestic ideals, who is transported into the nineteenth century.

As readers argue over its message, Anne Hathaway has made clear that controversy has not weakened her enthusiasm for the story.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at The End of Oak Street premiere, Hathaway said she had read a draft of Yesteryear two years earlier and immediately felt connected to it. She described watching the novel find a wide audience as exciting, particularly when friends told her they had immediately gone back and reread it.

“I knew the intense feeling that I had for it, so it’s been really fun watching people discover it,” Hathaway said.

Hathaway’s enthusiasm also predates the intense online conversation that has surrounded Burke’s novel. In the same interview, she celebrated the book’s success and expressed genuine happiness for its author.

“People are just loving it and I couldn’t be happier for Caro, what a triumph for her,” Hathaway added.

Amazon MGM has acquired the film rights to Yesteryear, with Hathaway attached to star and produce. That places the actress in a particularly close position to the project, especially as the novel continues to generate debate among readers.

The controversy has included arguments over the book’s ending, its political ideas, and speculation about how much outside influence shaped the finished work. Burke has denied claims that Hathaway secretly wrote the novel, while Hathaway has largely kept her attention on the challenge ahead.

While Yesteryear continues to divide readers, Hathaway is already preparing for another major 2026 release that takes her in a completely different direction.

Anne Hathaway stars in The End of Oak Street, a science-fiction survival film directed by David Robert Mitchell. The cast also includes Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella, and Christian Convery. Warner Bros. is releasing the film in U.S. theaters and IMAX on August 14, 2026. The story follows a suburban neighborhood that is suddenly separated from its familiar surroundings after a mysterious cosmic event.

The Platt family, led by Hathaway’s character Denise Platt, finds itself in an unfamiliar environment populated by prehistoric creatures. As they search for answers, the family must also figure out how to survive together.The project comes from Mitchell, who serves as writer and director, with J.J. Abrams among the producers. 

The movie shares some DNA with Jurassic Park: ordinary people are trapped around prehistoric creatures, and survival depends on cooperation under pressure. However, The End of Oak Street places the danger inside a suburban community, giving the concept a family-centered angle.
