The movies, once declared a fading art form, have staged a comeback worthy of their own sequel. 2026 has theaters dancing toward a $35 billion global box office feast, powered by Gen Z crowds and giants like Toy Story 5, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, while AMC Theatres shattered a 106-year-old record with 10.2 million moviegoers flocking to the theaters in the span of mere 5 days.
As if the popcorn gods were not already satisfied, AMC Theatres just welcomed a staggering wave of visitors in five days, turning a century-old cinema empire into the belle of the box office ball.
AMC Theatres’ century-long record finally meets its match
The popcorn machines were working overtime because AMC Entertainment Holdings just announced a record-breaking weekend that looked straight out of a Hollywood finale. According to the theater giant’s own announcement, more than 10.2 million moviegoers filled AMC Theatres in the United States and ODEON Cinemas internationally from Wednesday through Sunday, marking the company’s highest-attended weekend of the decade.
The celebration was powered by the explosive debut of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which delivered the second-highest domestic and global opening weekend gross ever, while helping AMC generate its highest total weekend revenue in company history. The cinema chain broke records for admissions revenue and food and beverage sales, even surpassing the previous concession milestone set by Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

As per the announcement, AMC’s superhero-sized success did not arrive alone, as Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey continued pulling audiences into premium formats, including record-setting Dolby Cinema at AMC results. With IMAX 70mm screenings still running around the clock at AMC Lincoln Square 13, theaters proved that movie magic is not fading; it is simply demanding a bigger screen.
With people even interested in knowing how films reach the IMAX theaters, Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey have done quite the number in creating a generation run of box-office madness.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey dominance in the theaters
Hollywood spent years wondering whether audiences had fallen out of love with theaters, only for Christopher Nolan and Destin Daniel Cretton to politely remind everyone that the cinema was simply waiting for a proper invitation. The Odyssey arrived like a myth carved into marble, storming past $700 million with heroic speed, before Spider-Man: Brand New Day swung in and treated the box office like a personal playground with a $927 million worldwide opening.

The curious little twist of fate was that Tom Holland almost had to choose between two cinematic kingdoms, thanks to production schedules colliding like rival armies. Instead, a six-month delay created the rarest Hollywood magic trick: one actor anchoring two enormous theatrical adventures in the same season. Nolan’s mythic spectacle and Cretton’s superhero revival did not just sell tickets; they reminded audiences why leaving home for a movie can still feel like joining history. Together, The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day have delivered the kind of theatrical renaissance that future box office historians will describe as a once-in-a-generation summer miracle.
