Amazon MGM Studios has formally agreed with EON Productions to assume creative control of the James Bond franchise. Amazon MGM, as reported by Deadline, shelled out $20 million under a joint venture deal with veteran producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson for the creative control of the franchise. A UK earnings report of EON Productions mentioned Amazon's stake in "the Bond franchise, all associated assets, as well as its subsidiary companies, B24 Limited and B25 Limited."

Deadline's report observed that this payment would be related to eventual Bond profits. The deal is interesting in its size and timing. What had appeared as rumors of a billion-dollar acquisition is now a much smaller cash amount. Rather than paying close to $1 billion in cash, Amazon's actual payment to EON Productions came to be significantly short. This move secures Amazon's complete creative control over the franchise's future, meaning director Denis Villeneuve will have no final cut. Ironically, Christopher Nolan wanted the same control, but the deal was called off.

After decades of having full creative control of James Bond, the Broccoli family's new deal with Amazon heralds significant modifications, leaving one to wonder about why Christopher Nolan was passed over for the Bond movie.

Why Christopher Nolan did not make a James Bond film

In the midst of all the reconfiguring, one big name made headlines: Christopher Nolan. Rumors swirled that Nolan pitched, or was negotiating for, a James Bond movie as a follow-up to Tenet, but ultimately exited. He asked for final cut control, a creative concession that veteran Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson would not grant. The producers had strict creative control over every Bond film, denying any director final-cut rights.

Broccoli declared, "No director would have final cut while Bond was under her purview," per Variety. Nolan's insistence ran counter to that tradition, so when they hesitated, he moved on and subsequently delivered Oppenheimer instead. With Bond's universe in a topsy-turvy situation as creative authority changes hands, and even blockbuster directors are being left in the cold, the spy epic is about to go into its most unexpected phase yet, as the hunt for a fresh face for Bond will soon begin.
