Alyson Hannigan's heartfelt note on the death of her Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-star Nicholas Brendon has caused an outpour of goodbyes online. Recently, Brendon passed away from natural causes, according to his family, who confirmed his death. Following news of his passing at the age of 54, the actor, best known for playing Xander Harris on the cult-classic TV series, Hannigan, wasted no time mourning him and paid a tribute on Instagram.

Sometimes a quiet farewell has the power to stir strong emotions across multiple generations of fans.

In an emotional note, Alyson Hannigan, who starred as Willow on the series, expressed her love for her late co-star, Nicholas Brendon, adoring him for the days they spent together. She reminisced about hanging out with him, going to Dodgers games, and spending wholesome years of laughter and joy with her. Hannigan's post also featured a still image of the duo crouched in a deep embrace on an episode of Buffy.

"My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP," the actress wrote on her Instagram. 

The How I Met Your Mother actress and Brendon appeared on the show as series regulars as part of the core group, Scooby gang, and were active during its seven-season run from 1997 to 2003. Hannigan's Willow was a frienemy to Sarah Michelle Gellar's Buffy, while Brendon's sarcastic Xander was the only human lacking supernatural powers in their crew.

Hannigan’s tribute struck a chord with fans, who grew up watching the duo portray Willow Rosenberg and Xander Harris, who became two of the show’s most beloved characters. Their on-screen deliberation made her farewell especially personal to viewers who had watched the show for many years. The news of Brendon's demise sent shockwaves across the fandom and among the Buffy cast and crew on Friday, when his family announced that he had passed away from natural causes, after a long battle with heart ailments in the past.

Brendon might have died peacefully but his past struggles were not easy to conquer.

In 2023, Nicholas Brendon went through heart attack. Later on, he was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect as well as cauda equina syndrome (CES). The CES being a medical emergency put severe compression on the spinal cord leading to several surgeries, then on.

"While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis, and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing. Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart," Brendon's family stated, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Despite his health challenges and personal struggles, which he experienced throughout his life, Brendon maintained a strong connection with both his artistic work and his audience. While in death, the actor has immortalized his art through Buffy, which remains an evergreen gem with or without a reboot.
