Matthew McConaughey is seemingly not opposed to the idea of a political future. Last year, rumors of the actor running for governor ran wild when posters that read "McConaughey for Governor" surfaced. Interestingly, McConaughey's character in the new drama series Brothers is also running for public office
And that had baffled many about whether the rumors were true. Fortunately, the actor has come forward to clarify, while also expressing his wish for the future.
Matthew McConaughey clarifies rumors about political future
During a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Matthew McConaughey was asked about the rumors of him running for governor in Texas. The host asked if there was any truth to the rumors or if they were only started for their new comedy television series, Brothers. Turns out there is indeed some truth to it.
“No no. The governor stuff was all real and then we added that to the show,” he confirmed.
“Not yet,” he responded when asked if he would consider the position one day.

The posters featuring him as a candidate were props for the show. However, the actor had considered running for governor of the Lone Star State in the past, but ultimately decided not to pursue it. Meanwhile, during the interview, his Brothers co-star Woody Harrelson, who is quite close to McConaughey, was quick to launch an unofficial campaign for him, perhaps a little too early.
Now, as for whether McConaughey will pursue a political future, the actor does not seem to have ruled out the idea just yet.
Matthew McConaughey is studying for a political future
During an interview with PEOPLE, Matthew McConaughey revealed that he had considered pursuing a political career nearly six years ago but eventually abandoned the idea. As of now, he wants to be present for his kids. When asked about the possibility of entering politics in the future, the actor said he is still studying and exploring the idea, although nothing has been confirmed.
"Like I said, it's something I started looking into probably six years ago and something I've continued to study what that arena is, what it would mean, how could I be useful in it, would I be useful in it?" he said.

During the conversation, McConaughey also revealed that he would only consider running for public office when the timing is right. He said he would likely wait until all of his children are grown up before entering politics. So, the possibility of him running for governor is not entirely off the table.
