Allison Janney was once told by a Hollywood agent that she could only ever play aliens and lesbians, all because of her unusual height. The revelation surfaced during a candid new interview, where the actress reflected on the uncertain, formative years of her career. Long before Emmy wins and an Oscar defined her name, casting rooms apparently saw her as a woman who simply did not fit anywhere conventional. That old memory, strangely enough, still makes her laugh today.

While that agent likely meant it as a limitation, Janney turned the label into something far more amusing than anyone in that meeting could have predicted.

Allison Janney indeed heard those very words years ago, while meeting with an agent early in her career. The advice was blunt: her towering frame supposedly boxed her into only the rarest of roles.

"I remember when I was very young trying to find an agent, and I had a meeting with one. She said, 'What can you play? Aliens and lesbians,'" Janney told Variety.

She then added, "That's what she said to me because I'm so tall. I've played lesbians. I haven't played an alien yet. So maybe I'll play an alien! Yeah, why not."

Janney also opened up about deeper insecurities behind her towering, confident screen presence during the same conversation. Despite spanning nearly four decades and delivering seven Emmy wins alongside an Oscar, she confessed to still feeling unlike her most self-assured characters. The actress told Variety that persistent ageism and pay disparities remain unresolved issues for women in the industry, even as roles keep improving with age.
