Air Bud Returns is set to bring back the iconic golden retriever franchise to theatres after decades, marking a major revival from Air Bud Entertainment and Cineverse. The project revisits the beloved sports-dog universe first introduced in 1997 and later expanded through multiple spin-offs. The new film will blend nostalgia with a fresh storyline featuring a young protagonist, a new Buddy, and a journey rooted in family emotion and competition today.

And as the film prepares to grace the screens, director Robert Vince shared how the franchise is revived again because of only one generation: millennials.

Robert Vince has confirmed that millennials were the key reason behind Air Bud Returns' revival, pointing to the audience that grew up with the original films. He is the long-time creative force behind the franchise and has directed and produced multiple entries across the Air Bud and Air Buddies universe. Vince explained the reboot strategy during an interview with Fandango, focusing on its emotional and generational appeal.

"Number one is that the people that grew up with Air Bud, they're millennials. The average age was 10 years old and guess what they have now? They have families of their own," Vince said during an interview with Fandango.

He then added, "So it was a perfect time to reintroduce Air Bud, a new Air Bud, in a theatrical setting that really allowed them to bring their kids to it. So it's a multi-generational opportunity now," emphasizing the intent to reconnect two generations of audiences.

The reboot introduces a fresh cast, led by Aydin Artis as Jacob, with Tracy Ifeachor as his mother and Tyler Labine in a key role. Edwin Lee Gibson also joins the ensemble, while the new Buddy is played by trained golden retrievers Charlie and Summer. The film is directed and written by Vince, the original franchise creator, alongside producer Anna McRoberts, ensuring continuity in tone and emotional storytelling.

While the cast builds a fresh emotional core, the production choices and returning creators keep the franchise deeply rooted in nostalgia, with anticipation already building ahead of its scheduled big-screen release.

Air Bud Returns release date and revival of the franchise in cinemas

Air Bud Returns is scheduled for a theatrical release in the United States on January 22, 2027. The film was initially planned for 2026 but was shifted to align with the franchise’s 30th anniversary celebration. This marks the first big-screen return for the series since 1998’s Air Bud: Golden Receiver, reinforcing its shift back into cinemas after decades of direct-to-video spin-offs.
