AI has recently been used to mimic the voice of Michael Caine to narrate a new audiobook of The Odyssey ahead of Christopher Nolan's upcoming adaptation. The project re-imagines Homer’s epic in the distinct voice of the Oscar-winning actor, who has been associated with Nolan’s films for years. The release comes as anticipation is high for Nolan’s all-star retelling of the ancient Greek tale, which is set to hit theaters soon.

As excitement builds for Nolan's ambitious adaptation, this different retelling of The Odyssey has already arrived, powered almost entirely by artificial intelligence.

Ahead of Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated adaptation of the epic, a new 13-hour audiobook version of The Odyssey has been narrated by a digitally recreated version of Michael Caine’s voice. It was created entirely with ElevenLabs’ AI tools and released through the company’s ElevenReader app. The audiobook features Caine's recreated voice alongside AI-generated narration, music, and sound effects.

“By bridging classical storytelling with digital innovation, this timeless epic is reimagined for modern audiences, brought vividly to life through ElevenReader’s cutting-edge technology. It was a pleasure to be a part of ElevenProductions’ retelling of The Odyssey,” Caine said, as reported by Deadline, highlighting how the project combines Homer's ancient tale with modern AI technology.

ElevenLabs revealed that the release will allow audiences to revisit Homer’s epic before Nolan’s movie hits theaters. ElevenLabs’ first in-house production, The Odyssey audiobook is addressed as the company’s first cinematic multicast audiobook. It has also combined a full cast performance, original music and immersive sound design.

Additionally, even though Nolan’s screenplay is based on Emily Wilson’s revisionist 2017 translation, Elevenlabs used the text translated by William Cullen Bryant in the 1870s. They confirmed no academics were involved. However, getting the pronunciation of the characters’ names right was a pain-staking process.

The audiobook's release also shines a spotlight on the ancient tale that Nolan is set to bring to the big screen with his signature cinematic scale.

Exploring Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey as Homer's epic still resonates today

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is expected to follow the legendary Greek king Odysseus on a perilous quest home after the Trojan War. Along the way he meets mythical beasts, divine beings, and many trials that test his will and skill. It is an epic adventure that takes years of wandering as he fights to return to Ithaca and his family.

While Odysseus fights dangers on the high seas, at home his wife Penelope and son Telemachus are in ever-greater danger from suitors anxious to claim his kingdom. Their stories are similar, touching on themes of loyalty, perseverance, and the bonds of family that remain. This adaptation of Nolan, who is set to visit Mumbai for his first-ever India premiere, is meant to reimagine Homer’s timeless story in a grand cinematic experience, mixing mythology with the director’s signature visual grandeur.

Meanwhile, with Nolan’s cinematic retelling of The Odyssey in the works, audiences can look forward to another take on Homer’s classic tale in the form of the AI-powered audiobook from ElevenLabs. Combined with state-of-the-art technology, Michael Caine's reconstructed voice will remind the fans that a story that is thousands of years old still finds new life across media, paving the way for Nolan's epic take. Together, the two projects highlight the enduring appeal of Homer's masterpiece and its ability to evolve with changing times.
