Hercule does not have an official release date yet, but production is set to begin in the summer of 2026, primarily in Liverpool. Given the filming timeline, the series is expected to arrive in the second half of 2027, most likely towards the latter part of the year. It will premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the United Kingdom, with BritBox handling the release across North America.

With the premiere window now in view, the next natural question is who exactly is bringing this world to life on screen.

Cast and crew of BBC's Hercule

Edward Bluemel leads the series as Hercule Poirot, making history as the youngest live-action actor ever to take on the role at just 33. Supporting cast for key roles, including Captain Arthur Hastings and Inspector James Japp, are yet to be officially announced, with further reveals expected as production ramps up. Behind the camera, Benji Walters serves as writer, with Jonny Campbell directing the first two episodes, and Mammoth Screen and Agatha Christie Limited producing.

With the creative team firmly in place, attention now turns to the story Hercule is set to tell.

What is Hercule about?

Hercule is a six-part prequel series that takes audiences back to Hercule Poirot's earliest days as a detective in interwar London. As the youngest actor ever to helm the role, Edward Bluemel brings a fresh and distinctly unpolished version of the detective to the screen. The story draws from three of Agatha Christie's celebrated early works while charting the origins of some of the characters' most iconic relationships.

Viewers will see Poirot forge his friendship with Captain Arthur Hastings, navigate his first encounters with Scotland Yard's Inspector James Japp, and come face to face with a brand new nemesis. It is equal parts intimate character study and sweeping portrait of Britain caught between two battles, a combination that promises both emotional depth and sharp intrigue.

With a potentially multi-season commitment already on the table, Hercule is clearly being built to last. As one of fiction's most enduring detectives prepares to return in his youngest form yet, Edward Bluemel's Poirot is shaping up to be a landmark moment for Christie adaptations. The little grey cells are just getting started.
