After Roughly Three Months, SAG-AFTRA and Major Studios’ Deal Is Confirmed

If labor negotiations had a red carpet, SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers would be taking a triumphant bow after sealing a contract with theatrical flair. The deal sidesteps a strike while zeroing in on what mattered most: stronger protections against AI digital replicas, improved streaming residuals, increased contributions to health and pension plans, and much more.
After months of intense bargaining and industry-wide tension, both sides have now reached what appears to be a firmly settled agreement.

According to Deadline, SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have finalized a tentative successor to the 2023 TV/Theatrical Agreement just ahead of the June 30 deadline, neatly sidestepping another industry freeze. The accord centers on AI safeguards, improved streaming residuals, and stronger funding for performer benefits. It signals a calculated reset after a turbulent negotiation cycle.
At the heart of the agreement is an expanded four-year contract term, a notable shift from the traditional three-year cycle designed to stabilize long-term labor relations. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers has also agreed to a sizable contribution to the pension fund. That financial reinforcement addresses one of SAG-AFTRA’s most persistent priorities.
AI protections form the most closely watched pillar of the deal. New guardrails regulate the use of generative systems, particularly around digital replicas of performers. SAG-AFTRA negotiators had pushed for cost parity, ensuring that AI-generated performances cannot undercut human labor by being significantly cheaper.
The scope of the agreement stretches across motion pictures, scripted primetime television, streaming platforms, and emerging media formats. This wide coverage reflects how rapidly the entertainment landscape has evolved. By securing terms across these categories, SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have attempted to future-proof the contract against further disruption.
While Paramount battles legal heat from customers, SAG-AFTRA edges closer to confirming its deal as it dots the final i’s on its agreement.
The steps SAG-AFTRA and the studios must clear
Before the tentative agreement can graduate into a fully confirmed contract, SAG-AFTRA must first pass through its own internal gatekeepers. The National Board will convene to scrutinize the terms and, if satisfied, recommend approval to its roughly 160,000 members. Only after that endorsement will detailed provisions, including artificial intelligence safeguards and pension contributions, be formally shared.

The process then shifts to the membership, where ballots cast online or by mail will determine the contract’s fate through a simple majority. Alongside voting, SAG-AFTRA typically organizes informational meetings to walk members through the fine print. If ratified, the agreement takes effect promptly, locking in stability with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
