Swamp Thing has barely crawled out of the bayou, and DC fans are already wondering whether the creature has been left to rot. Announced in early 2023 as part of James Gunn’s Gods and Monsters slate, the film went years without casting news, a production date, or substantial updates. With James Mangold busy directing A Complete Unknown and attached to Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi, cancellation rumors and speculation about creative clashes only grew louder.
However, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has finally delivered a reassuring update, confirming that Mangold’s swamp-set superhero film is still in development.

For a project that has spent years lurking in the shadows, Swamp Thing has finally offered DC fans a reason to stop digging its grave. Speaking to Deadline on the red carpet at the Los Angeles premiere of Clayface, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran confirmed that James Mangold’s long-awaited superhero film remains in development, with its screenplay currently being written.
“We're working on it, absolutely, yeah, yeah, the script is being written as we speak, but it's something we're excited about,” he said.
Safran also offered a glimpse into why the supernatural DC adaptation has required patience, pointing to Mangold’s busy slate and the practical challenge of coordinating schedules with an established filmmaker. Rather than suggesting that the project has stalled, his comments indicate that the creative process is moving forward. For a film that promises a darker corner of the DC Universe, the wait continues, but the outlook is considerably less murky.

Besides Safran's revelation to Deadline, elsewhere in DC’s horror department Clayface has earned enthusiastic early reactions before its October 23, 2026, release, with critics applauding its bloody body-horror approach. Its box-office prospects appear less fearsome in the wrong way, however, as early presales reportedly lag behind Supergirl.
With Supergirl not flying as high as Safran hoped, DC’s plans for Swamp Thing deserve a closer look.
What DC has in store for Swamp Thing
DC Studios appears ready to let Swamp Thing grow roots far away from the usual superhero spectacle. Rather than squeezing James Mangold’s vision into a larger cinematic puzzle, the filmmaker is developing a Gothic horror story built around the tragedy of a man trapped inside a monstrous form. The emphasis is on psychological torment, unsettling atmosphere, and the heartbreaking divide between humanity and monstrosity.

Think Frankenstein rather than another superhero assembling a team to save the world. Mangold wants the freedom to tell a complete, self-contained story without being handcuffed by decades of comic book lore, obligatory cameos, or sequel setups, giving the DCU a distinctly darker flavour. With this isolated creature feature taking shape on its own terms, the script is now being written.
