A24 has built its reputation on making big impressions without spending blockbuster-sized money. Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight was made for just $1.5 million, while Robert Eggers’ The Witch cost a mere $4 million. Even Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once came with a relatively modest $14.3 million budget, proving that ambitious storytelling does not always need a mountain of cash. Although they have upgraded on the philosophy quite a lot with Eden Ring, with a reported budget of about $200 million.
A24 is now putting its money where its creative ambitions are with Kit Connor’s Elden Ring, taking financial risks as seriously as artistic ones.

A24 is officially playing in the blockbuster big leagues, and its latest gamble comes with a price tag that could make even Hollywood heavyweights blink. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the studio is pouring nearly $200 million into its live-action adaptation of Elden Ring, shattering its previous production budget record and pushing its indie reputation into decidedly expensive territory.
The scale of this investment becomes even more startling when stacked against A24’s previous productions. The nearly $200 million budget is almost three times the $70 million spent on Timothée Chalamet’s Marty Supreme and four times the $50 million cost of Alex Garland’s Civil War. Suddenly, A24 is playing in the same financial league as Spider-Man: No Way Home, which cost $200 million, and Jurassic World Rebirth, budgeted at $180 million.

So, what makes A24 willing to gamble this much gold on the Lands Between? The Wall Street Journal report points to a property with considerable commercial muscle: FromSoftware’s 2022 Game of the Year has sold more than 36 million copies worldwide, generating over $2 billion in revenue. For A24, Elden Ring is not merely an artistic experiment; it is a potentially blockbuster-sized ticket into Hollywood’s biggest league, perhaps in the same way that Backrooms did.
Beyond a talented cast led by Kit Connor, the creative minds behind the Elden Ring adaptation make that nearly $200 million budget even more intriguing.
The brains behind Elden Ring
A nearly $200 million budget needs more than a legendary gaming franchise to justify its appetite, and A24 has assembled some formidable creative talent to bring Elden Ring to life. Alex Garland, the filmmaker behind Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Civil War, is writing and directing the fantasy epic. Meanwhile, George R. R. Martin, who helped develop the game’s foundational mythology, is joining the production as a producer.

The ambition extends well beyond the names on the call sheet. Principal photography wrapped earlier in the summer of 2026, with the entire film shot for IMAX, while elaborate physical sets, intricate costumes, and extensive visual effects help bring the game’s ruined kingdoms and monstrous bosses to the big screen. With even George R.R. Martin being in on the project, A24’s biggest production gamble yet has the creative firepower to match its enormous price tag.
