Danielle Fishel thought Girl Meets World was supposed to carry the spirit of Boy Meets World without simply trying to recreate it. Instead, the actress found herself watching the follow-up series lean harder into its predecessor than she had expected. Years later, Fishel is finally opening up about the creative decision that left her frustrated behind the scenes.
What was meant to be a fresh chapter soon started feeling like a trip back to a world Fishel thought they had already left behind.

Speaking on Pod Meets World with former co-stars Will Friedle and Rider Strong, Danielle Fishel recalled being frustrated once the first season of Girl Meets World got underway. She said she and executive producer Michael Jacobs had previously discussed making the sequel its own show rather than simply recreating Boy Meets World, with Fishel even writing a blog explaining that longtime fans might spot Easter eggs but would need to let the new series stand on its own. She believed the follow-up was supposed to introduce a new generation rather than constantly lean on the original.
"I remember being really frustrated after the first season started. Michael Jacobs, the executive producer who created both shows, made Girl Meets World too similar to Boy Meets World". Danielle Fishel said on Pod Meets World.

Fishel said that the vision gradually became harder to maintain as the writers continued bringing elements of Boy Meets World into the sequel. Girl Meets World ultimately ran for three seasons on Disney Channel from 2014 to 2017, compared with the original series’ seven-season run on ABC from 1993 to 2000. Fishel also believes the move from a major broadcast network to a cable channel worked against the sequel, adding another challenge to a show that was already trying to find its own identity.
But Fishel’s story did not end when Girl Meets World wrapped, with the actress carving out an entirely new chapter across podcasts, television, and the director’s chair.
What Danielle Fishel is doing after Girl Meets World?
Danielle Fishel has continued building on her Boy Meets World legacy through podcasting, production, acting, and directing. She remains a co-host of Pod Meets World alongside Friedle and Strong while also expanding her audio portfolio with projects including Teen Beat and the American Idol podcast. She has also executive produced nostalgic projects such as How Rude, Tanneritos! with her husband, Jensen Karp, continuing to turn her television nostalgia into a broader entertainment career.

Behind the camera, Fishel has also established herself as a prolific television director, with credits spanning more than 50 episodes across shows including Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, Lopez vs Lopez, Raven’s Home, and Shifting Gears. She has continued acting as well, appearing in the 2026 YouTube comedy series Dugout Dads, while remaining closely connected to the Boy Meets World cast through projects such as Doc Meets World.
And while for Danielle Fishel, Girl Meets World may not have become the fresh chapter she envisioned, but the story she built beyond it has proven there was plenty more to come.
