For years, Game of Thrones has kept George R.R. Martin’s sprawling world firmly rooted on the small screen, turning A Song of Ice and Fire into one of television’s biggest fantasy phenomena. Now, A Song of Ice and Fire’s most stunning story is getting a movie, as Aegon’s Conquest breaks the franchise’s long-running television tradition and takes Westeros to theaters for the first time. With dragons, conquest, and the birth of the Iron Throne at its center, this could be the biggest gamble the Game of Thrones universe has made yet.

Aegon’s Conquest will travel back to the earliest days of Targaryen rule, centering on Aegon I Targaryen and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, as they launch the campaign that changes Westeros forever. The story is drawn from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, with the conquest putting Aegon’s legendary dragon Balerion the Black Dread and Visenya and Rhaenys’ Vhagar and Meraxes at the heart of a war that ultimately leads to the creation of the Iron Throne.

And this is not simply another Game of Thrones story being squeezed onto a giant screen. Warner Bros. has positioned Aegon’s Conquest as the franchise’s first theatrical feature film, with Willimon writing the screenplay. The project was previously reported as a Game of Thrones movie in development before Warner Bros. revealed its official title at CinemaCon, where it appeared on the studio’s “2027 and beyond” slate. No specific release date has been announced yet, meaning the wait for dragons on the big screen is officially on.

And if anyone still doubts whether Westeros has enough firepower to fill a movie theater, the franchise has already spent years proving that audiences will keep coming back for more.

The original Game of Thrones remains one of television’s biggest success stories, growing from an average of 9.3 million viewers in Season 1 to 32.8 million viewers per episode by Season 7. The series also holds the record as the most awarded narrative series in television history, with 59 Primetime Emmy Awards, while becoming HBO’s most licensed program and generating billions through international syndication, merchandise and physical media.

The franchise’s newer chapters have continued that momentum. House of the Dragon opened in 2022 with nearly 10 million viewers on its first night, marking the biggest audience for a new original series in HBO history. Season 2 averaged roughly 25 million cross-platform viewers per episode, while Season 3 opened with 21.5 million global viewers in its first three days.

Meanwhile, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which premiered in early 2026, became the year’s biggest television hit so far, averaging 13 million viewers per episode and earning nine Primetime Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. Season 2 has already wrapped filming for a 2027 release.

With that kind of momentum behind Westeros, Aegon’s Conquest is arriving at a moment when the franchise has arguably never had more reason to aim for the biggest screen possible.
