Princess Diana was perhaps the most famous woman in the world, yet fame did not mean people truly knew her. Her every move was photographed, scrutinized, and broadcast, earning Princess Diana recognition as the most photographed woman of the 20th century. Still, the public largely saw a carefully mediated version of her life, leaving her private struggles and motivations out of reach.

Some of that mystery may soon fade, as a new documentary brings never-before-heard Princess Diana tapes to global audiences.

Princess Diana has been photographed, dissected, remembered, and endlessly retold, but now she gets something rather rarer: the chance to speak for herself. Deadline reported that Diana Unheard will feature previously unheard recordings of the royal discussing her life, loves, and family. The three-part series is now heading toward an international launch.

“This is Diana not as a passive victim of events, but as a woman taking control of her own narrative and risking everything to make her voice heard,” said Kerene Barefield, Creative Director of Love Monday TV.

It is quite the departure from Princess Diana as merely a royal tragedy in a tiara. Diana Unheard instead promises a woman reclaiming the microphone. The series therefore aims to put Princess Diana’s voice at the center of a story others have told countless times, as she candidly speaks about royal figures such as  King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Deadline reported that Cineflix has landed international rights to Diana Unheard, with the series set for a major launch at MIPCOM in Cannes. Love Monday TV built the documentary around secretly recorded conversations between Princess Diana and James Colthurst from 1991. Andrew Morton and James Colthurst also appear, having helped unlock several hours of tapes behind Diana: Her True Story.

As Kim Kardashian and Meghan Markle vie for Princess Diana’s revenge dress back now that it is back in the spotlight and a documentary prepares to unveil her unheard tapes, one friendship suddenly deserves a closer look.

Prince Diana’s bond with James Colthurst

Princess Diana and James Colthurst’s friendship began rather accidentally in 1979, when the 17-year-old aristocrat twisted her ankle during a ski trip in Val Claret, France. Colthurst, then a medical student, examined the injury, but the encounter proved far more lasting than either could have expected. Shared aristocratic circles and mutual friends soon turned that chance meeting into a lifelong friendship.

During the loneliest years of Prince Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles, Colthurst became a trusted confidant and sounding board, with Diana reportedly calling him as many as eight to ten times a day. She also visited him while he worked as a radiologist at St Thomas’ Hospital, and Colthurst advised her on speeches and supported her charitable work, including efforts surrounding HIV awareness. Their remarkable bond ultimately became central to the unheard recordings featured in Diana Unheard, giving audiences a rare chance to hear Princess Diana tell her story in her own voice.
