Chris Colfer says some Glee fans crossed the line by wanting him to date costar Darren Criss, and the idea left him feeling a little uncomfortable. Glee ran for six seasons, and its biggest love story kept fans glued to their screens long after the finale. Some of that devotion, however, followed the cast home, and it landed in a very different way for just one of them.

While fans were busy planning a happily ever after for two fictional characters, Colfer was quietly uneasy about the real-life edition.

Chris Colfer felt uncomfortable because Glee fans believed the show was a documentary and wanted him to date Darren Criss. Colfer played Kurt Hummel, Criss played Blaine Anderson, and their romance fueled years of fan fiction.

"They really, really wanted Darren [Criss] and me to be in a relationship in real life," Colfer told Bustle.

He added, "Sometimes those people would cross a line and make me feel a little uncomfortable."

In the Bustle interview, Colfer explained that fans used details from his personal life, or invented them, to support their stories. At one point, he could not be photographed with anyone without that person becoming fan fiction material, which he compared to being "patient zero." He called the stories jarring and sometimes s*****, though he found one perk, since he was usually the hero and rarely the villain.

While fans kept rewriting the love lives of Colfer and Criss online, the real versions were quietly unfolding far from any keyboard.

Darren Criss married Mia Swier in 2019, and the couple shares two children, a real-life storyline that has nothing to do with Chris Colfer. Colfer, meanwhile, has been dating actor and producer Will Sherrod since 2013, after the pair reportedly met through Glee circles in 2012. The pair marked 13 years together in January 2026, with Colfer posting a message online to praise Sherrod as a great boyfriend and a dog dad.

Career-wise, Colfer stars in his first film of the decade, the campy horror romp The Restoration at Grayson Manor, which opens in limited theaters on Friday, October 9. As for the Glee sequel series that Ryan Murphy has teased for years, Colfer said he is waiting for more information while Murphy works on Monster, his anthology series, before seriously considering a return as Kurt. Colfer is fine with fans shipping Kurt and Blaine, but when it comes to his real life, the line is firmly drawn.
