Some of Hollywood’s biggest what-ifs never make it to the screen. More than a decade after Her became an Oscar-winning classic, Samantha Morton is revisiting one of the industry’s most surprising casting changes. Describing the experience as one where “a little sad would be an understatement,” the acclaimed actress has finally opened up about losing the role that ultimately went to Scarlett Johansson.

Morton may never have appeared in the final cut of Her, but the emotional weight of that experience has clearly stayed with her.

Speaking to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Samantha Morton admitted that being replaced during Her's post-production left her feeling far more emotional than many may have realized. While she described the experience as surprising and deeply saddening, Morton also reflected warmly on the creative process she shared with director Spike Jonze and co-star Joaquin Phoenix. She explained that the version of the AI character she developed carried a distinctly British personality, making it fundamentally different from what ultimately appeared on screen.

"It was just very, very different. And I think Scarlett Johansson has a beautiful voice. She’s incredibly evocative. So I got it, but I was sad.” Morton said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Morton was originally cast as the voice of the artificial intelligence Samantha and spent the entire production recording dialogue live from a soundproof booth so Joaquin Phoenix could interact with her performance in real time. However, during post-production, Spike Jonze decided the character required a different vocal quality and recast the role with Scarlett Johansson, who re-recorded every line, as Morton revealed on Happy Sad Confused. Although the change meant Morton’s work never reached audiences, she has consistently spoken with admiration for both Johansson’s performance.

While Morton made peace with Her years ago, she admitted another career challenge has proven far more immediate.

During the same appearance on Happy Sad Confused, Morton revealed that she hasn’t booked another acting role since completing Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Reflecting on the industry’s realities, she explained that although she has excellent agents and still believes she is a strong performer, she also understands the competition has only become tougher. At 49, Morton acknowledged that Hollywood is filled with talented actors all vying for the same opportunities, making even a major blockbuster no guarantee of immediate work.

“I’ve got really good agents & a manager, but at the end of the day, I’m 49. I do believe I’m a good actor, [but] there are other good actors out there, ” Morton revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Released on July 17, 2026, The Odyssey marked one of the biggest productions of Morton’s career in recent years. Christopher Nolan’s epic adaptation of Homer’s classic stars Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, and Morton herself as the powerful witch Circe. Shot entirely with IMAX 70mm cameras, the film has become both a critical and commercial triumph, making Morton’s comments all the more surprising given the project’s enormous success.

While Scarlett Johansson ultimately became the voice audiences remember, Morton’s honesty serves as a reminder that some of cinema’s biggest creative choices often carry deeply personal stories behind the scenes.
