Hillman College is set to open its gates for a new batch of students who bring with them an unforgettable legacy of A Different World. Back in 2024, Netflix first announced the sequel to the iconic sitcom that was a television staple in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. The original series, which followed Denise (Lisa Bonet) at Hillman College in Virginia, aired from 1987 to 1993 and was essentially a spinoff of The Cosby Show. However, the show quickly shifted its attention to Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison) and Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy).

Now, their next generation is about to enter their alma mater, and Netflix has released the first trailer and a new look ahead of its September debut to give a glimpse of this exciting journey.

A Different World sequel, which debuts on Netflix on September 24, 2026, will center on Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), the youngest daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. It will focus on her venture into her freshman year at her parents' HBCU alma mater and will strive to break out of their shadow in order to forge her own identity. An official trailer and the complete cast roster are available for fans to get a first look at the series.

With the series, the executive producer of the original series, Debbie Allen, who produced 122 episodes and directed 83 during the show's initial run, will also return and direct three episodes, including the premiere. Mandy Summers (That '90s Show, The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh) will step in to executive produce alongside Tom Werner (The Conners, Roseanne, A Different World). Along with them, the show will feature the return of original writers Reggie Rock Bythewood (Swagger, Get On The Bus) and Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King, Love & Basketball) as executive producers.
