Robbie G.K. went from playing a smoothie-shop barista to becoming one of Heated Rivalry’s most talked-about scene-stealers, and that breakout did not happen in a vacuum. His portrayal of Kip Grady and his chemistry with François Arnaud helped turn the hockey romance into a fan favorite, with Crave and HBO behind the series that introduced him to a much wider audience. Now, Crave appears to be backing the actor beyond his breakthrough role, with Meatballs, earning praise from Graham-Kuntz for supporting projects willing to take creative risks.
In an era dominated by formulaic blockbusters and familiar franchises, Crave and Robbie G.K. seem ready to make a different kind of bet.
Robbie G.K. praises Crave's risk-taking initative
Speaking at MIPCOM Cannes alongside Meatballs co-star Maddie Phillips, Robbie G.K. made a case for taking creative chances in an industry that often favors familiar formulas. The actor was discussing Meatballs, a reimagining of Ivan Reitman’s 1979 Bill Murray comedy, which takes a fresh swing at a beloved Canadian classic. For G.K., the gamble is precisely what makes the project exciting.
“It’s a big swing, and as we’ve seen from Crave and others, big swings are worth taking,” he said.
G.K. also addressed whether audiences are ready for the film’s particular brand of comedy, pointing to the changing appetite for laughs that do not always follow a predictable playbook. He described the cultural mood as a "pendulum" that has swung from one direction to another, suggesting that comedy is once again making room for different voices and approaches.
For G.K., Meatballs has an advantage in its mockumentary style and varied cast of characters, giving the humor plenty of targets rather than relying on one predictable perspective. He argued that the jokes are aimed at different characters throughout, creating multiple ways for viewers to connect with the comedy. In his view, audiences are ready for the ride.
Between Heated Rivalry winning fans and Jennifer Lopez’s kids getting swept up in it, Crave is proving that risky bets can pay off.
Crave's upcoming slate of creative projects
Crave is not putting all its creative eggs in one basket, either. Beyond Heated Rivalry season 2 and the upcoming Meatballs reimagining, the streamer is backing Yaga, a dark psychological thriller steeped in folklore that ventures far from conventional television territory. Its slate also includes Thunder Point, an ambitious drama in development that signals Crave has little interest in sticking to familiar formulas.

These projects make Robbie G.K.’s praise particularly fitting: Crave appears willing to take chances on stories that might look like gambles on paper but could become the next big talking point. Whether it is folklore with a darker edge or a fresh spin on a comedy classic, the streamer is embracing creative risks, giving G.K. good reason to celebrate its willingness to swing big.
