Emma D'Arcy had a tough time making a wig to land a career-changing role in House of the Dragon. Hair seems to be a crucial part of the audition process to secure a role in the HBO show. And that is something D'Arcy had initially struggled with before landing their iconic role in the show, as the actor was asked to send a picture of them in a wig.
However, with almost all the stores closed during COVID-19, the actor could not get a wig and ended up making one out of their own hair for the audition process.
Emma D'Arcy and their partner made makeshift wig for House of the Dragon
Emma D’Arcy, during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, recalled being asked to wear a wig during their audition for House of the Dragon, as the showrunners wanted to see how the actor would look with Rhaenyra Targaryen’s long, flowing hair. However, D’Arcy had very short hair and did not even have a wig on hand. So, D’Arcy and their partner decided to make a makeshift wig using loose hair they had at home and send a picture to the showrunners.
“Literally, a bag of hair, pieces of weft with no way of attaching them to your head,” they recalled.
“We like, went to a supermarket, and we bought like some clips and like a hot glue gun, and then we started sticking bits of hair to the clips,” they recalled.

The actor revealed that they were in possession of their own loose hair from a previous job, where their hair had to be cut, and they had kept it. With only supermarkets open during the COVID-19 pandemic, D’Arcy and their partner had no option but to opt for a makeshift wig, which was quite different from the wig seen on the show. The actor further revealed on the show that after sending their picture, the showrunners asked them to keep trying, so they continued improvising the wig.
But in the end, the bizarre wig seemed to work out. D’Arcy got the role of Rhaenyra Targaryen. As it turns out, hair is quite important when it comes to landing a role in this universe.
While D’Arcy had to secure a wig, another actor had to consider shaving all his hair during the audition.
Dexter Sol Ansell had to shave his hair for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
Dexter Sol Ansell was required to appear bald to play the character Egg in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Instead of wearing a prosthetic bald cap, the young actor decided to shave his hair for the role. He was even asked if he would be comfortable shaving his head during the audition process, which he agreed to. However, he shaved his head only after officially getting the role.

Now, anyone familiar with the world of George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones knows that hair is one of the most important elements in the story. Those from the Targaryen dynasty have their signature silver, shining hair and can ride dragons. Clearly, hair became important for the actors quite early in the audition process.
