Matthew McConaughey has always sounded like a Buddha wearing cowboy boots, dispensing life advice with the relaxed confidence of a man who could turn a traffic ticket into a philosophical breakthrough. From Hollywood reinventions to family life, the Oscar winner has a talent for making ordinary questions feel like conversations beside a Texas campfire.
His latest subject is aging, an adventure with no stunt doubles and absolutely terrible rewind controls. At 56, McConaughey has identified his favorite decade and admitted that his early 50s brought unexpected uncertainty.
His solution involves retiring one particularly dramatic phrase from the vocabulary.
Why Matthew McConaughey calls his 50s a midlife opportunity
Speaking on The Jay Shetty Podcast, Matthew McConaughey shared his thoughts on entering a new chapter of life.
"So I am just turning 56 and 40s were my favorite decade," McConaughey said, explaining that his 40s felt like a period where he'd stripped away the unnecessary and honed in on what genuinely energized him.

McConaughey admitted the first few years of his 50s felt a little wobbly, describing the period as a midlife crisis opportunity where a man naturally looks back at what he's accomplished and forward to where he's headed. His theory is that midlife crises become painful or unhealthy when people fail to give themselves enough credit for what they've already built to get where they are.
Rather than dwelling on the past, McConaughey framed the 50s as a chance to build on what's already there, to take what you've done and push it to another level, putting another log on the fire. He also reflected on acting as a craft where his raw expression passes through four filters—writing, directing, editing, and performance, before it reaches an audience, a thought that ties into his broader philosophy about creative control and self-expression.
And his recent movie happens to involve a man discovering that even the sweetest business can turn dangerously sour.
The Rivals of Amziah King brings honey, bluegrass and trouble
Matthew McConaughey plays the title character in Andrew Patterson's The Rivals of Amziah King, a rural Oklahoma crime drama whose biggest surprise might be the sheer danger of running a honey operation. Amziah is a beekeeper, musician, and community fixture who leads a bluegrass-loving group of misfits.

Angelina LookingGlass plays Kateri, with Kurt Russell, Cole Sprouse, Rob Morgan, Tony Revolori, and Scott Shepherd among the supporting cast. The film opened in U.S. theaters in August and arrived on digital platforms September 15. Rotten Tomatoes lists an 88% critics score, reflecting praise for its unpredictable storytelling and McConaughey's performance.
U.S. viewers can rent or purchase it through Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. These are digital transactions rather than an included Prime subscription; pricing varies by storefront. McConaughey may be reconsidering what each decade offers, but Amziah's chaotic universe suggests his screen adventures remain gloriously unpredictable.
