Backrooms has officially announced its HBO Max streaming release date, bringing the horror phenomenon home following its theatrical run. The film draws from the Backrooms, a concept that started on the internet and expands the creepy universe of infinite yellow rooms, liminal spaces, and disturbing creatures that became a viral online horror phenomenon. The franchise has gone viral with videos, games and fan-made stories, and the movie has brought even more attention, turning the cult internet phenomenon into a major feature film. 

The internet-born horror phenomenon is now making its way to streaming, bringing its unsettling world of liminal spaces and endless yellow rooms to a wider audience.

Variety announced that Backrooms has officially announced its HBO Max streaming release for September 25. This happened after its major theatrical run that saw the horror movie surpass Marty Supreme to become A24’s one of the most successful films. Directed by Kane Parsons and starring Renate Reinsve and Chiwetel Ejiofor, the film takes Parsons’ popular web series and the viral Backrooms horror concept and expands them into a feature-length story.

Months before Variety reported the news, Backrooms has had a solid box-office run worldwide, earning $396.59 million globally in its theatrical run. The film has earned around $197.52 million in the domestic market, which is nearly half of its total earnings, while its international collection has been around $199.06 million. Backrooms is also a huge commercial success with overseas audiences surpassing domestic ones in its global performance, increasing even more interest in the horror film. 

It has also performed well internationally in several key markets. They made $17.68 million in the United Kingdom, followed by France at $12.22 million and Germany at $8.30 million. Spain contributed $7.51 million, followed by Italy with $5.89 million and Poland with $5.66 million. It also became the highest-grossing film and secured a historic $81.4 million domestic opening weekend.
