The domestic box office has spent 2026 rearranging the furniture, and some of Hollywood’s oldest names are no longer sitting at the biggest table. Franchise power remains the currency, but this year has distributed it rather differently, with a mix of animation, superheroes, prestige blockbusters and unexpected breakouts reshaping the studio race.

As the year heads toward its final stretch, the latest figures offer a snapshot of an industry where familiar hierarchies can move surprisingly quickly when the right movies land at the right time. The studio pecking order has acquired a few unexpected names, while the year’s biggest theatrical performers have redrawn the usual Hollywood map.

Universal currently leads the 2026 domestic box office with approximately $1.43 billion, followed by Sony at $1.18 billion and Disney at $1.05 billion, according to the latest figures reported on September 15. Amazon MGM follows at roughly $557 million, while Lionsgate occupies fifth place with approximately $518 million.

The numbers reflect a year in which individual releases have done much of the heavy lifting. Universal has benefited from The Odyssey and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, while Sony has had Spider-Man: Brand New Day driving its domestic haul. Disney, meanwhile, has drawn substantial business from releases including Toy Story 5 and The Devil Wears Prada 2. Amazon MGM and Lionsgate have also found substantial performers of their own. Project Hail Mary has crossed $344 million domestically for Amazon MGM, while Lionsgate's Michael has passed $372 million, giving both studios enough theatrical muscle to occupy positions traditionally associated with Hollywood's larger distributors.

On the other side of the scale, weighed down by Warner Bros. and Paramount, however, the numbers tell a considerably quieter story.

Warner Bros.' strongest 2026 domestic releases so far include Wuthering Heights at about $84 million, Mortal Kombat II at nearly $80 million and Supergirl at roughly $72 million. The studio's summer slate also included The End of Oak Street, which has passed $53 million domestically.

Paramount's year has similarly lacked a release capable of joining the industry's biggest earners. Scream 7 has generated nearly $122 million domestically, while Scary Movie has passed $108 million. PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie reached over $51 million during the summer, while By Any Means opened in September.

There is still plenty of calendar left, and Paramount's upcoming slate includes Heart of the Beast, Street Fighter, Ebenezer and The Angry Birds Movie 3. Warner Bros. likewise has major releases ahead, meaning the current ranking is a snapshot rather than a final verdict.

For now, though, the box office has delivered an unusually clear picture: Universal, Sony and Disney have supplied the biggest theatrical engines, while Amazon MGM and Lionsgate have used their own breakouts to push two legacy studios temporarily outside the top five.
