When Patrick gifted Kat an electric guitar at the end of the movie, viewers never knew that it was more than just his attempt to make up with Kat. It has only now become clear that the guitar was a promise from the makers of a musical return, and that too on Broadway. 10 Things I Hate About You is a classic and one of the best romantic comedies to come out of the ‘90s era. The paid setup trope mixed brilliantly with the enemies-to-lovers theme proved to be a fiery combination for a youthful movie about love.

Now, that magic is coming to Broadway’s esteemed stage in the form of a musical by Lena Dunham and Carly Rae Jepsen.

Broadway will host the musical based on10 Things I Hate About You, adapted by Lena Dunham and Carly Rae Jepsen, next year. Preview performances for the production, which is based on the 1999 romantic comedy starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger, will start on August 17, 2027, precisely one year from now. Information about the venue, casting, and opening night has not yet been released.

Jepsen and Ethan Gruska are developing the music and lyrics for the musical, while Dunham and Jessica Huang are adapting the musical's book. Tom Kitt is in charge of music supervision, arrangements, and orchestrations, while Christopher Wheeldon is directing and choreographing. Mike Bosner, whose credits include Shucked, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, and Cats: The Jellicle Ball, will be the producer.

10 Things I Hate About You is described in the Broadway show's logline as a rebellious musical about maturing, self-discovery, and defying social norms. Two sisters set out to define themselves on their own terms amid the teenage drama, cliques, and crushes. The musical will prove to be a new way to enjoy the classic tale of Kat and Patrick’s unusual love, and we will finally get to see a version of the movie that was teased in the iconic scene where Patrick serenades Kat with 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You.’

The movie had the most wacky plot executed right, which resulted in a classic that has aged very well and is still celebrated across generations of youth.

The movie adaptation of 10 Things I Hate About You, a retelling of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, follows the Stratford sisters, whose strict father forbids the younger Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) from dating until her older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) starts going out. Bianca advises Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a new student who has fallen for her, to find someone to fake-date Kat. 

In order to get Kat out on a date, Cameron plays matchmaker and pays Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger), one of the bad boys at Padua High School, to take Kat out. What followed was the classic opposites attract in all its full glory. Apart from the musical, there was once a plan laid out for a sequel trilogy, which still seems to be in development. Anyhow, fans would be looking forward most to the musical, which seems closer and inevitable now.
