Andrew Garfield is scared of taking on a special role. The 43-year-old actor has portrayed iconic characters on screen, from superhero Spider-Man to combat medic Desmond Doss in Hacksaw Ridge. Throughout his career, Garfield has never shied away from playing demanding and emotionally complex roles, and continues to push himself to take on new challenges. 

However, there is one special off-screen role that scares him.

During Andrew Garfield’s recent appearance on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, the actor was asked about a challenge that feels daunting to him. After giving the question some thought, Garfield opened up about a deeply personal fear in his real life. He revealed that the thought of becoming a father scares him.

“Being a dad scares the s*** out of me. It scares me so much,” he said.

While Garfield laughed as he confessed his fears on the Good Hang Podcast, he acknowledged that fatherhood would be one of the biggest and most important challenges of his life. Previously, in an interview with Esquire in 2024, Garfield stressed that becoming a parent is not a decision to be taken lightly and opened up about the immense responsibility that comes with having a child. He further revealed his doubts about becoming a father after turning 40.

"I'm already a tired guy. I don't want to be a tired dad," he told Esquire.

However, cut to 2026, the actor seems to have changed his mind about becoming a father and starting a new family.

Andrew Garfield recently opened up about the possibility of starting a family during an interview on the SmartLess podcast. At the age of 43, the actor revealed that he does not have children yet and admitted that he is not proud of that. That explains the actor’s hope for the future.

"I'm 42 and I'm childless and I'm not entirely proud of that," Garfield said on the SmartLess podcast.

Although Garfield once admitted that he was unsure about having children as he stepped into his 40s, his perspective has since changed. During the same podcast, the actor revealed that he has not given up on the idea of starting a family. And Garfield said that he hopes to have children someday. Now, it is a rare glimpse into the actor’s personal hopes, dreams, and thoughts about fatherhood.
