Venomverse expands with Sony Pictures Animation, creating an animated Venom movie that will serve as a separate project from the live-action trilogy starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and his symbiotic counterpart. The studio has brought on Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein to direct the new film, per The Hollywood Reporter. The dynamic duo gained recognition for their work on Final Destination: Bloodlines, which became the highest-grossing and best-reviewed entry in the franchise.
The upcoming animated movie shift marks a significant new direction for the character and for Spider-Man-related content at Sony, though Venom has already achieved monumental success through the live-action movies, grossing over $1.8 billion from three films. Producers Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach, who worked on the live-action trilogy, will return to oversee the animated adaptation of the film to formulate its familiar artistic direction.
Sony Pictures Animation has not attached a writer to the project yet, as it is still in an early development stage. However, a writers' room is taking shape at the studio for this not-so-kid-friendly animation. Counting on the great success it achieved through the animations, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Sony would not hesitate to have the quirky symbiote transmigrate to a new format. However, it might be a painstakingly slow burn process, pushing the release of the film light-years away.
Meanwhile, Tom Hardy, who starred in Venom live-action blockbusters, will participate in the production, according to the outlet's reports. However, his exact role as either voice actor, producer, or other capacity remains unknown. Hardy's involvement would draw a familiar yet crowd-pulling connection between two different landscapes of storytelling from the established live-action universe and the upcoming animated series. It would also be nostalgic for fans who already miss Hardy in Venom's skin.
While waiting for the animated film might actually age young viewers, streaming the entire trilogy has never been easier.
