It has been more than 5 years since a sequel to the hit Netflix family entertainer We Can Be Heroes was first announced. Responding to the massive success of the Netflix original in December 2020, the streaming giant almost immediately ordered We Can Be Heroes 2 in January 2021 to enter development. However, fans have been waiting since then for the follow-up to release, with the intended release window of the project already passed.

Now, people are looking for any latest update on the development of Robert Rodriguez’s directorial, which seems to be taking a lot longer than expected.

Since its initial announcement, there has not been much information about We Can Be Heroes 2. The most recent scoop came on September 21, 2023, in an interview with Collider when director Robert Rodriguez provided an update on the sequel. In addition to confirming that the film was still in the works, Rodriguez also stated that they are now attempting to expedite its production.

“The bigger rush is to do a sequel for that because of the kids growing up" he said.

However, it has been almost three years since that interview, and there is still no sign of the movie being out of development status or even entering production. Earlier estimates suggested a release window for the sequel to be around late 2024 or early 2025, but now, it is way past that. 

A significant disadvantage of the passing time is that the kids in the cast who are the central characters in the film have now all aged a lot, which might be a problem for the storyline, considering it is largely about the adventures of kid superheroes. Another thing Netflix missed out on was the success wave of the first installment, which has long gone now.

The age concern might suggest that the main cast might go through a significant overhaul now.

Director Robert Rodriguez's focus on the children's ages seems to imply that now the primary cast is least likely to reprise their roles, even though it has not been officially confirmed which We Can Be Heroes cast members will return or not return for the sequel. However, Pedro Pascal might return, and judging by the unexpected conclusion of the first movie, Priyanka Chopra Jonas might also follow suit. 

Depending on his schedule, Pedro Pascal may make a comeback in We Can Be Heroes 2 as Marcus, Missy's father and a master swordsman with magnetic abilities. Given that Pascal is currently one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood, with his latest venture, Behemoth, making Oscar buzz, the Game of Thrones and Last of Us star might make a judgment call on the sequel. Things are still not entirely clear on We Can Be Heroes 2, except for the fact that it is confirmed and in development.
