Few films possess the raw, unsettling power to shock and captivate audiences across five decades like The Exorcist. Since its controversial 1973 debut, the story of a young girl possessed by a demon and the desperate priests fighting for her soul has transcended the horror genre. The franchise’s continued existence proves the enduring human fascination with the battle between faith and ultimate evil. This longevity, however, raises a modern challenge for viewers: Does this expansive, chilling film series currently reside in its sum on the streaming giant Netflix?

To embark on a viewing marathon, one must examine the specific streaming home for each installment.

The Exorcist (1973) is typically not available on Netflix in major regions, such as the US or UK, and is instead commonly found on services like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Google Play Movies & TV. Its first sequel, Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977), and The Exorcist III (1990) are also generally not available on Netflix, but can be found on services like Amazon and Apple TV.

Moving to the later entries, Exorcist: The Beginning (2004) has periodically appeared on Netflix in various international territories; however, its most consistent availability is through platforms like Apple TV in the US. The next instalment, Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist (2005), is streaming on Prime Video and Amazon Video, and The Exorcist: Believer (2023) is available on Amazon Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. None of the 6 films from the franchise are available to stream on Netflix in the USA.

As the franchise continues to collect fans, the saga of demonic possession is set for a major cinematic reinvention with a top-tier cast like Scarlett Johansson and a renowned horror director.

Scarlett Johansson joins The Exorcist franchise relaunch

Blumhouse-Atomic Monster is demonstrating a serious commitment to the next film in the iconic horror franchise by casting two-time Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson in the lead role. According to Deadline, Mike Flanagan, the acclaimed writer-director, expressed his enthusiasm, noting that Johansson is a brilliant actress whose captivating performances feel grounded and genuine. This casting choice signals the studio’s intent to make this iteration a significant, high-profile cinematic event following the underperformance of the previous film, The Exorcist: Believer.

The upcoming movie will tell an entirely new story set within The Exorcist universe and is explicitly not a direct sequel to the 2023 film. Johansson’s involvement, her first major role in a pure horror film, follows her successful relaunch of the Jurassic World franchise. While the original release date was announced for March 13, 2026, the writer-director, Mike Flanagan, has indicated that this timeline is unlikely, suggesting the final release may be later as production schedules are finalized. As additions to the horror genre continue, it will be interesting to see what the OG franchise Exorcist, has to offer with a new cast and crew.
