Who is Michael Jackson's Bodyguard, Bill Bray? 'Michael' Brings the King of Pop’s Trusted Confidant Into the Spotlight
Amid the chaos behind the global spotlight of Michael Jackson, only a handful of people remained constantly by his side, and Bill Bray was one of them. Jackson’s biopic, Michael, breathed life into Bray’s character and, in doing so, made him a lot more than a security guard. Bray, portrayed by KeiLyn Durrel Jones, was a loyal protector and quiet confidante. His friendship with Jackson provides a unique insight into the superstar’s personal life, away from the spotlight and public gaze.
But who was the actual man behind this inspiring character?

Michael sees the spotlight fall on one of the most trusted figures in Michael Jackson’s life, his bodyguard, Bill Bray, played by KeiLyn Durrel Jones. Bray was more than Michael Jackson’s bodyguard; he was a constant presence, an emotional rock, and a source of support. Bray, a retired officer of the Los Angeles Police Department, started working with Jackson in the early '70s.
He supposedly supervised all safety procedures, advised Jackson on business deals, and even took the singer to the doctor when he was ill. In his 1988 autobiography, Moonwalk, Jackson said that Bray was always very professional and very careful, expressing how much of an integral part of his life Bray has become.
"He travels with me everywhere, and occasionally he's my only companion on short trips. I can't imagine life without Bill; he's warm and funny and absolutely in love with life. He's a great man," he had written in the autobiography.
Jones landed the role of Bray via a self-taped audition that caught the attention of the filmmakers. With the bits and pieces of details available, Jones was faced with the challenge of reconstructing the man who seemed to be ever-present in Jackson’s life, entirely. Talking about the role, he said during a Zoom conversation.
“I would notice that Bill Bray was always there. He was always around. But when you’re looking at a picture or video of Michael Jackson, you’re looking at Michael Jackson, not really paying attention to who else is in the frame.”
KeiLyn Durrel Jones' immaculate portrayal of Bill Bray is, in fact, a fragment of the grander picture, played by an even sharper cast.
