Tom Hardy has made a career of treating the word “typecast” as a personal insult. He bulked up into Bane, raced through Mad Max: Fury Road as Max Rockatansky, voiced the symbiote alongside Eddie Brock in Venom, and played dream thief Eames in Inception. Yet apparently, Hollywood’s shape-shifting star had another trick tucked away: a surprise rap debut, 'Czarface Meets Frankie Pulitzer', released under the not-so-mysterious alias Frankie Pulitzer.
Although whispers had already suggested that Tom Hardy was cooking something up in the studio, the album’s release still arrived as a delicious surprise.
Tom Hardy’s Frankie Pulitzer has turned Hollywood lore into hip-hop chaos
Tom Hardy has apparently decided that a celebrated acting career was not quite enough, so he has now turned his own résumé into rap material. On ‘Grim-Visaged War,’ his Bane persona makes an unexpected return as he recites the 'Richard III' monologue in that unmistakable voice. It is perhaps the most delightfully bizarre career callback imaginable.
“I be somewhat of a scientist like Willem Dafoe / if you know, then you know, goblin up crumbs,” Tom Hardy raps on ‘Raw Forever,’ smoothly moving from his own film world into Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin. The superhero trail continues with a reference to Doctor Doom and Victor von Doom, before Nicolas Cage’s Frank Pierce from Martin Scorsese’s Bringing Out the Dead gets a nod.

The detour becomes positively gothic on 'Mad Technology', where Stephen King, Misery, Kathy Bates and Cujo all receive their invitations. Hardy’s Kathy Bates reference is decidedly explicit, but the joke lands as another gleefully outrageous pop-culture wink. By the end, Bane, Shakespeare, Marvel, horror and Hollywood have all wandered into Frankie Pulitzer’s world, and somehow, everyone got a verse.
While we can now be fairly certain Tom Hardy has another verse up his sleeve, just like his appearance in Mobland 3, the bigger question is how anyone figured out that Frankie Pulitzer was hiding behind the mask.
How did Frankie Pulitzer become an open secret?
Frankie Pulitzer was hardly Hollywood’s best-kept secret, because the clues kept piling up like an especially determined detective board. The trail stretched from Czarface’s connection to Venom: Let There Be Carnage and the mysterious “Face Puller” credit to old recordings of Tom Hardy rapping as Tommy No. 1. Then came vocal similarities, Instagram breadcrumbs and increasingly suspicious connections.

By the time Tom Hardy’s lyrics began dropping references to Willem Dafoe, Martin Scorsese and his own cinematic universe, the guessing game had practically become an open secret. The ultimate giveaway arrived when Bane’s unmistakable voice surfaced on ‘Grim-Visaged War,’ turning suspicion into near-certainty. In the end, Frankie Pulitzer was less a hidden identity than a Hollywood secret waiting for its final clue, making Pulitzer's newest album, or should we say Hardy's debut rap album, quite the delight.
