Dakota Johnson was recently joined onstage by her longtime friend, Taylor Swift. Johnson hosted the October 3rd episode of Saturday Night Live, the second episode of Season 52, as she promoted her new film, Verity. This was her third time taking the reins of the iconic sketch-comedy series.

While Johnson’s previous SNL outings have given us plenty of viral and standout moments, this one certainly raised the stakes with the arrival of the pop superstar, who, judging by their friendship, apparently doubles as Johnson’s unofficial breakup therapist as well. Swift hilariously crashed Johnson’s monologue as the actress jokingly aired her grievances about her romantic misfires.

Taylor Swift corrects Dakota Johnson on SNL

Dakota Johnson, in her opening monologue, joked about her history of dating musicians. She expressed gratitude for having friends who do not judge her despite everything. And then came Taylor Swift, walking onto the stage to a wave of cheers. The actress then introduced Swift to the stage as her "literal therapist", only for the songstress to correct her friend.

"I’m not your therapist, actually. You just show up once a week at my house with an empty bottle of wine and ask if I want some," she said as the crowd erupted with more laughter.

This cameo was not entirely a surprise, though. Swift had already planted a subtle Easter egg for the appearance at the mid-September Emmys. She slipped a subtle Saturday Night Live Easter egg into her Law & Order: SVU sketch at the event. Johnson’s SNL stint came only days after her appearance alongside Colin Farrell in Swift’s self-directed 'Patient Zero' music video, which made its debut at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 27, 2026.

For Johnson, working with Swift was made even more enjoyable by the friendship they already shared, which also began on the SNL sets.

A history of Taylor Swift and Dakota Johnson's friendship

Taylor Swift and Dakota Johnson are believed to have first crossed paths in February 2015 at the star-studded Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Celebration. However, their friendship was not known to anybody until October 2016, when Cara Delevingne shared a now-deleted FaceTime screenshot wishing Johnson a happy 27th birthday, which also featured Swift.

Only days later, Swift and Johnson were seen grabbing dinner at New York’s Waverly Inn before heading to the Bowery Ballroom with a star-studded crew that included Serena Williams and Zoë Kravitz.

For years, Swift and Johnson managed to keep their friendship under the radar. But 2026 seems to have changed the game. Their friendship has entered a whole new era now, with both personal and professional crossovers making 2026 feel like the ultimate BFF year.
