Kanye West has spent much of the past few years making headlines for reasons that have little to do with the music, the very things that first made him a cultural force. Yet, even as controversy has followed him through public appearances, business fallouts, and increasingly polarizing statements, his artistic legacy remains difficult to dismiss.

Joe Rogan, whose conversations have hosted some of the most influential and divisive personalities in pop culture, has now offered a reminder of precisely why West’s creative reputation has endured. The rapper’s return to packed stadiums prompted Rogan to revisit the curious divide between the music and the man.

A second appearance by Kanye West on Joe Rogan's The Joe Rogan Experience remains an unlikely prospect after an awkward exchange in March 2025, the first being in 2020. But that has not stopped the podcaster from discussing the musician. In fact, his latest conversation with Colum Tyrell made clear that West's artistry still commands his attention.

"Diamond-encrusted Swastikas and the next thing you know, the dude's selling out stadiums. Selling out enormous stadiums," Rogan said, already drawing the contrast between West's polarities.

"Nothing but bangers, for f****** decades, the guy's been making bangers," he added.

During episode #2572 with Tyrrell, an Irish comedian, Rogan discussed West's return to performing, the conversation inevitably touching in detail on the rapper's antisemitic statements and other controversial landmarks. West's recent stadium comeback provided the immediate context, pointing to his having drawn enormous crowds from Los Angeles and Chicago in the US to Jakarta, Tbilisi and Istanbul, despite the backlash that has become a persistent part of his identity even after his Wall Street apology back in January.

For a podcast built around sprawling conversations, West's music and public life make for a particularly interesting subject.

Kanye West's first Joe Rogan Experience

Launched in 2009, The Joe Rogan Experience became known for conversations that could stretch across several hours. Guests get to move between their professional lives, personal convictions, and subjects far beyond their immediate work, making it a natural destination for someone as difficult to separate from the cultural conversation as Kanye West.

The rapper eventually appeared on the show in October 2020. West's episode, numbered #1554, ran for almost three hours and aired during his 2020 presidential campaign. The conversation meandered from his creative ambitions and political ideas to even his personal outlook.

It offered audiences an extended opportunity to hear the rapper speak outside the familiar confines of promotional interviews. Alas, his subsequent controversies would make any future conversation a very different proposition. For now, Rogan's latest remarks return attention to the enduring contradiction of West's public controversies remaining impossible to ignore. Despite everything, neither has erased the musical catalogue that made him a phenomenon.
