When Bad Bunny headlined the Super Bowl LX halftime show on February 8, 2026, he redefined the moment. From the opening reggaetón beats to the stage designed like a Puerto Rican “casita,” he invited the world into his roots. Yet, even amidst the contagious energy and a live wedding on the Super Bowl field itself, one element grabbed headlines across every outlet: the surprise appearance of Lady Gaga during the performance.

Suddenly, one question began trending alongside takes on the show - is Lady Gaga Hispanic? Her presence sparked curiosity about her own background. So what’s the truth behind the speculation?

The answer is no, Lady Gaga is not Hispanic or Latina. Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta on March 28, 1986, in Manhattan, New York City, she is American with Italian ancestry. Both of her parents come from families of Italian heritage. Gaga has often described herself simply as Italian-American, a cultural identity she proudly embraces. Her Italian American identity was already solidified when she appeared as a teenage Lady Gaga (credited as Stefani Germanotta) in The Sopranos Season 3, episode 9, titled ‘The Telltale Moozadell’ (2001).

That said, fans playfully inflated her ‘Latin’ image following her Super Bowl surprise. When she performed a salsa-infused version of her song ‘Die With a Smile’ and danced in a baby-blue dress by Dominican-American designer Raul López of Luar, social media started affectionately calling her names like 'Lady Guadalupe Hernandez Gagita'. Her dress, particularly the shade of blue referencing the original Puerto Rican flag and a Flor de Maga brooch representing Puerto Rico’s national flower, added to the cultural conversation surrounding her appearance.

But Gaga was not claiming the culture, so where exactly does she come from and how did her roots shape this moment?

Lady Gaga’s parents and their shift to the USA

Lady Gaga’s parents, Joseph Germanotta and Cynthia Louise, both come from families established in the United States with strong Italian roots. She has a younger sister, Natali Germanotta, who is a fashion designer. Gaga grew up in New York, where her family encouraged artistic expression from a young age.

Interestingly, her relationship with her father has been publicly discussed in terms that go beyond music and heritage. Gaga once told Rolling Stone about navigating differing political views with him, especially as her father has expressed support for MAGA, a dynamic she described as challenging but grounded in family love.

“I just try to focus on my relationship with my dad outside of what we don’t agree about. As everyone knows, that is hard. We’re a family, just like all families.”, Lady Gaga shared.

While Lady Gaga’s ethnicity is Italian-American and not Hispanic, her collaboration with Bad Bunny and her thoughtful, culture-respecting presentation at the Super Bowl brought fresh dialogue to her global identity.
