Hans Zimmer has spent decades giving cinema some of its most recognizable musical identities, from the sweeping sounds of The Lion King to the haunting compositions of Interstellar and Inception. With two Academy Awards and a career spanning more than 150 film scores, the German composer has become one of Hollywood's most influential musical storytellers. His work on Denis Villeneuve's Dune films has added another formidable chapter to that legacy.
Now, as the filmmaker prepares to close his science-fiction trilogy, Zimmer has offered a significant update about the music audiences can expect from its final installment. And rather than simply revisiting the sounds that made Arrakis unforgettable, he is preparing to take the franchise in a new direction.
Hans Zimmer plans a largely original score for Dune: Part Three
Hans Zimmer has explained that the musical identity of Dune: Part Three will be considerably different from its predecessors. In his conversation with The Hollywood Reporter Australia, he described the first film as a contemplative story about a boy discovering a new world, while the second took on the character of a war movie.
"The largest amount of the movie is completely new music, and it is only right towards the end that I sneak a little bit from the movies… just to tie it all together," he said.

The decision also reflects the dramatic shift in the source material. Based on Frank Herbert's Dune Messiah, the film takes place 17 years after Dune: Part Two, with Paul Atreides ruling as emperor and confronting the consequences of his power. As Zimmer explained to The Hollywood Reporter, the change in genre calls for a more muscular musical identity rather than a simple extension of what audiences have already heard.
The decision to leave familiar themes behind raises another interesting question: how much of this new musical identity has Zimmer actually put together?
Hans Zimmer is approaching the third film with a fresh musical identity
Interestingly, Hans Zimmer has also indicated that he has not yet written the music for the third installment. His approach appears to begin with understanding the film's emotional landscape rather than immediately returning to familiar compositions. That distinction matters because the story has moved far beyond Paul's introduction to Arrakis. The character is no longer a young outsider discovering his destiny but an emperor struggling with the consequences of fulfilling it.

The composer's Oscar history makes this development particularly interesting. Zimmer has received 12 Academy Award nominations and won twice, first for The Lion King in 1995 and again for Dune in 2022. His nominations also include Rain Man, Gladiator, Inception, Interstellar and Dunkirk. His work on Dune: Part Two further earned him a Golden Globe nomination, while his latest score for F1 has also entered the 2026 awards conversation.
With Dune: Part Three arriving on December 18, 2026, Zimmer is already appearing in early Oscar predictions for Best Original Score. However, its eventual reception and awards prospects will depend on the finished film and its music.
For Zimmer, the challenge is to make the final musical chapter feel like an ending without relying on the past to do all the emotional heavy lifting. A handful of familiar notes in the climax could make that closing connection even more powerful.
