According to Variety, editor and director John Ottman is set to direct Billy and Me, a feature film chronicling the formative years of superstar singer-pianist Billy Joel. The film tells the origin story of Joel before fame, before the hits, and significantly, before Piano Man, the 1973 song and album that lofted him to stardom. The narrative is told through the eyes of Joel's first manager, Irwin Mazur, who discovered the singer in 1966.

Mazur signed him in 1970 and oversaw his career up to his breakthrough deal with Columbia Records in 1972.

“This is the formative years of Billy and his relationship with Irwin Mazur, the man who recognized Billy’s amazing talent even before Billy did himself,” Ottman said. Production is slated to begin this fall in Winnipeg, Canada, and New York.

The film will also delve into the chaotic romantic entanglements and heavy personal trauma that fueled Joel's early songwriting. It addresses his time in the acid-rock duo Attila with drummer Jon Small, and the devastating romantic rift that nearly cost the singer his life.

"This is the most honest, heartfelt, and authentic portrayal of Billy’s early life and rise to becoming one of the greatest musical voices of our time", Small said.

Crafting an authentic look at the legend

According to Variety, Filmmaker Adam Ripp is set to write the script and will produce the film under his ArtPhyl Pictures banner. The project has secured the exclusive life rights of Mazur and Jon Small, who is onboard as a consultant. Small ensures the project will reflect the real history with absolute integrity and respect.

The narrative aims to avoid exaggeration, focusing instead on the genuine friendships and creative sparks of the era. Director John Ottman expressed immense pride in the emotional development of the script, centering the man with a multi million-dollar net worth.

"It is funny, heartbreaking, and ultimately very inspiring," Ottman added while discussing the humanity at the core of the film. Financial and domestic distribution are currently being managed by prominent industry veterans like music executive Mitchell Leib.
