Billie Eilish Could Lift the Lid on Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar for Acting Debut

Fame is fleeting, but Sylvia Plath immortalized the exquisite terror of existence with a pen sharper than any sword. Widely revered as a titan of twentieth-century literature, Plath fundamentally reshaped modern writing with her confessional style and Pulitzer Prize-winning mastery of language.

Her only novel, The Bell Jar, remains a haunting American classic, unmatched in its raw portrayal of mental illness and societal suffocation. Its claustrophobic intensity cries out for a performer unafraid to dwell in shadow and nuance.

Billie Eilish, theatrically inclined as ever, may now translate Plath’s oppressive masterpiece to the silver screen.

Billie Eilish eyes an acting debut in The Bell Jar.

Billie Eilish, whose awards shelf could crush a small table, is reportedly in talks to make her acting debut in Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar. She is eyeing the lead role of Esther Greenwood, while music contributions remain off the table, according to an inside scoop from The Insneider and confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.

Oscar-winning director Sarah Polley, known for Women Talking, Away From Her, and Alias Grace, is attached to direct and wrote the screenplay herself. Focus Features is finalizing the United States distribution deal, giving the adaptation major prestige and reach. Polley’s vision promises to preserve the novel’s confessional intensity and haunting atmosphere.

In addition to that, the film is being produced by Joy Gorman Wettels, Plan B Entertainment, and StudioCanal. Gorman Wettels developed the project through her company Joy Coalition, packaging it with Eilish and Polley, and partnering with Plan B and StudioCanal before Focus Features’ involvement. The collaboration suggests a meticulously crafted adaptation for both fans of literature and cinema.

Fans would not be shocked if Billie Eilish, formerly linked to joining the big screen with James Cameron, delivers The Bell Jar’s emotion, though the subtleties demand a prior look.

A guide to The Bell Jar on screen

The 1979 adaptation of The Bell Jar, directed by Larry Peerce, remains infamous, though not for artistry. Critics described it as a superficial mess, failing to convey Esther Greenwood’s internal landscape. Lawsuits and scathing reviews ensured the film would linger in memory as much for its failures as for attempting Sylvia Plath’s notoriously confessional novel.

Reviewers ridiculed the melodrama and miscasting. Marilyn Hassett, nearly thirty-two, portrayed a nineteen-year-old Esther, leaving audiences bemused. Some reviewers called the character selfish and morbid, completely missing the emotional core meant to connect with viewers.

Later adaptations attempted to explore Sylvia Plath herself. The 2003 biopic Sylvia starred Gwyneth Paltrow and Daniel Craig, focusing on Plath’s adult life and her marriage to Ted Hughes. While Paltrow received praise, critics felt the film leaned heavily on melodrama, failing to capture Plath’s intellectual and artistic genius, though it linked closely to the creation of The Bell Jar.

Documentaries and cancelled projects have kept the novel’s cinematic potential alive. The 2018 BBC documentary Sylvia Plath: Inside the Bell Jar blended impressionistic reconstructions, narrated by Maggie Gyllenhaal, with interviews from Plath’s daughter, Frieda Hughes, and contemporaries. With numerous cancelled projects revolving around The Bell Jar, including attempts by Kirsten Dunst and Julia Stiles, suggest fans are still awaiting a perfect adaptation; perhaps Billie Eilish may finally partake in fulfilling that ambition.
