Anne Hathaway Credits Beyoncé’s ‘American Requiem’ for Helping Her Find ‘Mother Mary’ Voice
Finding the right voice requires more than talent. It demands a total reconstruction of musical identity. Hollywood is buzzing with the upcoming release of Mother Mary, a film that promises to dive deep into the chaotic life of a superstar. Anne Hathaway takes the lead, portraying a fictional singer whose journey is as traumatizing as it is glamorous. To prepare for this demanding role, she had to look toward the reigning titans of the music industry for technical and emotional guidance, and Beyoncé naturally comes on the list.
The process of evolving from a musical theatre performer to a contemporary pop star was a long and arduous journey, but for Anne Hathaway, 'American Requiem' might have made things slightly easier.

For the upcoming A24 production, Anne Hathaway portrays a singer reminiscent of icons like Madonna and Lady Gaga. According to Variety, she specifically studied the stillness and mesmerising technique of Beyoncé to understand modern phrasing and musicianship. She said that by listening to ‘American Requiem’ repeatedly, Hathaway learned to appreciate the power of a sweet and still vocal presence.
“So I listened to ‘American Requiem’ by Beyoncé, over and over and over,” she said at A24 and Spotify's recent listening party for the films 7-track album. She abandoned the rigid structure of theatre to find the coolness and swag necessary for a top-tier performer.
According to Variety, Anne Hathaway admitted that she never rated herself as a singer because her voice is softer compared to the high notes of her mother. It took two years to crack the pop sound, which she describes as a completely new language.
“Learning pop phrasing was a really big deal — that was like learning a new language”, she said.
This psychological evolution sets the stage for a dark and intense exploration of fame and desire on the big screen.
