Jeff Schaffer, the director of Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, recalled how Barack Obama began offering Larry David notes, prompting David to remind everyone that he was the president of the set. The reaction is hardly surprising for someone whose basic instincts are dry humor and quick wit. This is the comedian who treated a wooden ring stain like a criminal investigation, refused to share a smoothie over someone else's lips touching the straw, and turned the smallest breaches of social etiquette into epic battles.
When David and Obama finally worked together, the set was almost destined to become a delightful mix of awkwardness, sharp wit, and unforgettable comedy.

Jeff Schaffer revealed in a recent Variety interview that Barack Obama was far more than a prestigious executive producer and guest performer on Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness. The former president arrived prepared, having carefully read the material before offering thoughtful, creative feedback. What followed, however, was a classic Larry David response that nobody on set could have predicted.
"And Larry just goes, “Yeah, but I’m the president of this,” after Barack Obama offered his first creative note on the script. Jeff Schaffer recalled that the executive producer had spent much of the meeting praising the material before suggesting one small change. When Obama reminded Larry David that he had accepted advice from his advisors when he was "the president of the United States", the comedian's deadpan comeback instantly stole the conversation.
Schaffer also told Variety that he regretted never exploiting the delicious absurdity of having a former president as executive producer. Imagine demanding a larger budget or three additional shooting days through executive authority. Reality, regrettably, remained more restrained, although Obama's creative instincts earned far greater praise than any imaginary veto ever could.
Although Larry David's refusal of Barack Obama's advice was perfectly on brand, listening to a former president with a résumé rivaling the Enola Holmes 3 cast would hardly have been a terrible idea.
Larry David on Barack Obama's comic timing
Larry David does not hand out comedy compliments lightly, which made his praise for Barack Obama all the more notable. While promoting Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, the comedian repeatedly highlighted the former president's instinctive comic rhythm. David even admitted that Obama needed very little direction and possessed remarkably natural improvisational skills.
The admiration was not limited to broad praise. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Larry David revealed that Barack Obama improvised the memorable 'old lips' punchline during a milkshake sketch. Sharing scenes with a former president already felt surreal, but watching Obama effortlessly land jokes made the experience even more remarkable for the veteran comedian.

Jeff Schaffer later recalled another behind-the-scenes moment when Larry David briefly considered calling Barack Obama an idiot, then laughed at the absurdity of the situation. Obama immediately joined the fun by joking that nobody could call the president an idiot. Judging by David's glowing assessment of Obama's comic instincts, perhaps the president of the United States had already earned the approval of the president of the set.
