Luca Guadagnino has built a reputation for pairing cinematic sensuality with star power, drawing Hollywood's biggest names into roles that challenge their public personas. From Julia Roberts in After the Hunt to Daniel Craig in Queer, and from Tilda Swinton in I Am Love to Ralph Fiennes in A Bigger Splash, the Italian director consistently places A-listers in subversive, emotionally raw territory.

Recently, Guadagnino opened up about his approach to working with marquee talent, revealing genuine affection for the performers who enter his creative world. 

At the Venice Film Festival, Luca Guadagnino described working with actors as an unusually tender experience. He compared the process to children building sandcastles together, with everyone searching for truthful expression without becoming banal.

“I’ve been lucky because, honestly, I have worked with some of the finest, most committed, bold performers I could have worked with. But I think they know that I love them,” he said.

Julia Roberts appears to embody that relationship. While making After the Hunt, Roberts knitted between takes and eventually gave Guadagnino the scarf she made for his birthday. He recalled the experience warmly, calling her fantastic and describing every day of the production as inspiring (via Variety).

His connection with Tilda Swinton also dates back decades. Guadagnino became fascinated by Swinton after watching Derek Jarman’s Caravaggio, eventually forming a friendship that developed into a long-running creative partnership.

His newest collaboration puts that philosophy around an entirely different subject, with artificial intelligence and Silicon Valley power at its center.

Luca Guadagnino’s next major feature, Artificial, reunites him with Andrew Garfield after After the Hunt. Garfield plays OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in the film, which dramatizes the chaotic 2023 period when Altman was fired and then reinstated within days.

The ensemble includes Monica Barbaro, Yura Borisov, Ike Barinholtz, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Hoffman, and Mark Rylance. The project faced a major setback when Amazon MGM abandoned its planned release of the nearly completed film.

Neon subsequently acquired worldwide distribution rights, giving the movie a new path to audiences. There is now a firm festival milestone. Artificial will have its world premiere at the 2026 New York Film Festival on October 5, with Guadagnino and members of the cast expected to attend.
