George Lucas trades the Force for algorithms, declaring AI the new destiny of cinema. Hollywood’s relationship with AI has become increasingly tense, with many artists, writers, and actors worried about job loss, voice cloning, deepfakes, and the erosion of creative control. As the technology spreads through the industry, debate has only grown louder over what it means for originality and accountability.

While most voices in the conversation sound cautious or outright alarmed, George Lucas is taking a very different view.

George Lucas is making clear that he sees artificial intelligence as a major part of cinema’s future, not a threat to be avoided. In a recent conversation with Rabit’s Foot, the Star Wars creator argued that new technology will make filmmaking easier and more adaptable, even if it makes some people uneasy.

“It’s progress, it’s the future,” he said.

Speaking to Rabit’s Foot, Lucas compared complaints about AI to old fears about cars replacing horse drawn travel, saying resistance to new tools is often just resistance to change.

“Artificial intelligence means it’s much easier for us to make movies,” he explained, framing the technology as the next logical step in storytelling.

His point was that every generation of innovation brings disruption, but that disruption also opens new creative doors. Lucas also addressed the risks head on, while still insisting that AI can help solve some of the very problems critics worry about.

“If you want AI that tells you when something is fake and where it came from, AI can do that,” he said. He added that people still need to be accountable for their actions, especially when technology is misused. For Lucas, the bigger picture is not fear, but responsibility: the tools are changing, and filmmakers will have to change with them.

The casting came together after Illumination chief Chris Meledandri learned just how much Lucas genuinely enjoys the studio’s films, especially the Minions. That admiration reportedly led to a conversation about giving him a role, and once the idea was floated to the creative team, it moved quickly. Rather than treating Lucas as a one off novelty, the filmmakers clearly saw his presence as a fun fit for the world they were building.

The Minions themselves have become a box office powerhouse since their debut in Despicable Me, helping the series grow into one of the biggest animated franchises in the world. Bringing Lucas into that universe feels less like a gimmick and more like a celebration of mutual admiration between a legendary creator and a studio that clearly knows how to have fun with its casting.
