There was a time when spotting a clown in the woods was enough to turn a quiet American town into a headline. Then the clowns multiplied, the internet got involved, and what began as a handful of unsettling sightings in 2016 became a full-blown cultural fixation.

Now, just in time for its 10th anniversary, Hulu is digging back into the strange phenomenon with Clown Panic. Strange enough on their own, the frenzy surrounding the clowns quickly turned from something funny to something terrifying, and today, something documented. 

Clown Panic will premiere October 12, 2026 as part of Huluween, streaming on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the US, while international viewers will find the documentary on Disney+, as per Hulu's press release.

For Hulu, the timing is hardly accidental. Huluween is the streamer’s seasonal Halloween programming, bringing together horror, supernatural stories, spooky originals and familiar Halloween favorites for viewers looking to settle into the season. The Disney+ side of the bundle also carries the Huluween offering, giving the programming a wider home beyond Hulu itself.

The documentary is directed by Ed Perkins and produced by Jonathan Chinn and Simon Chinn of Lightbox, with Suzanne Lavery serving as executive producer. The 2026 lineup includes Clown Panic alongside Season 2 of Vampirina: Teenage Vampire, Coven Academy, FX’s American Horror Story: 13, Soulm8te and Hokum. Classic Halloween fare including Hocus Pocus and Edward Scissorhands will also be part of the seasonal offering.

That places Clown Panic neatly inside a horror lineup built around both nostalgia and new reasons to turn the lights down low. This particular story, however, does not need a supernatural creature to make it unsettling.

Clown Panic goes back to the moment when a handful of strange reports became impossible for America’s news cycle, or the internet, to ignore.

Hulu's Clown Panic examines the 2016 reports that began when children in a small South Carolina community claimed to have seen clowns hiding in the woods. As similar sightings spread across the country, the situation escalated into school lockdowns, police investigations and a nationwide media frenzy.

The documentary uses archive footage, viral internet videos and interviews with witnesses. The added presence of law enforcement, clowns and cultural commentators examines how fear, social media and modern America collided during a period of "deep national anxiety."

Hulu describes the documentary as "darkly funny, unsettling and unexpectedly emotional," giving the story room for something beyond the obvious Halloween fright. A decade after the k***** clown sightings became one of 2016’s strangest viral obsessions, Clown Panic is arriving in the very season designed for stories like this. Only this time, the thing lurking in the woods is history.
