Neil Peart was far more than Rush’s legendary drummer. A master of precision, progressive-rock composition, and deeply reflective lyrics, he helped redefine what a rock drummer could be. His celebrated work earned him a place among music’s most influential performers, while his disciplined craft and private nature made him an enduring mystery to fans.
Now, CBC is preparing to explore the artist behind the drum kit in Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple.
Cast and featured musicians
As a documentary about a real musician, Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple does not have a traditional cast of actors. Instead, the film features Peart through archival material, concert footage, personal reflections, and commentary from people connected to his life and musical legacy.

Rush bandmates Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson are expected to be central voices in the documentary, offering insight into their longtime creative partnership with Peart. The film also brings together prominent drummers who will perform Rush songs alongside Lee and Lifeson, including Chad Smith, Stewart Copeland, and Danny Carey.
Their involvement is especially significant because Peart’s drum parts are known for their technical difficulty, intricate arrangements, and demanding physical execution. The documentary’s creative team includes directors Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn, filmmakers known for their work on music documentaries. It is produced by Banger Films and Elevation Pictures, with Republic Pictures acquiring the film’s rights outside Canada.
Next, the film’s personal and artistic journey reveals how Neil Peart became one of rock’s most original voices.
Plot and documentary focus
Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple will follow the drummer’s journey from his early years as a developing musician to his meteoric rise with Rush. Rather than offering a simple career retrospective, the documentary is described as an exploration of Peart’s artistry, influence, and enigmatic public image. It will examine how he helped blur the boundaries between progressive rock, jazz, pop, and heavy metal.

The film will use rare archival footage, intimate reflections, and extraordinary live performances to present a fuller portrait of Peart. Those elements should allow the documentary to move between the technical demands of his playing, the scale of Rush’s concerts, and the ideas expressed through his lyrics.
Peart was celebrated not only for his drumming but also for his songwriting, making his contribution to Rush unusually broad. The guest drummers’ performances will provide another way to examine his legacy. By attempting some of Rush’s notoriously complex material, they can demonstrate why Peart’s arrangements remain so challenging and influential.
After revisiting Peart’s life and influence, the next question is when audiences can watch this long-awaited music documentary.

Neil Peart died in January 2020 at the age of 67 after being diagnosed with brain cancer. The documentary arrives as a posthumous celebration of a musician whose influence continues to reach beyond Rush’s original audience. Its release also comes at a time when Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson are again performing Rush songs with drummer Anika Nilles on their Fifty Something Tour.
International viewing details have not been fully announced, although Republic Pictures has acquired distribution rights outside Canada. That leaves open the possibility of additional broadcasters or platforms carrying the film in other territories. The documentary promises a rare opportunity to hear Peart’s collaborators and fellow drummers reflect on a career that permanently changed rock music.
