Trying to predict Cillian Murphy’s next move feels like reading one of his characters before the third act. One minute he is carrying Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer to an Oscar, the next he is slipping into something quieter, stranger, or less commercial. That unpredictability is part of the appeal.
Murphy has built a career on zigging where Hollywood expects a zag, leaving room for fancasting, speculation, and internet noise.
The latest rumor: a supposed major villain role in James Gunn’s DCU.
Cillian Murphy is reportedly in talks with DC studios
A recent X post by WurldOnFilm claiming that Cillian Murphy is “reportedly in talks” with DC Studios for an antagonist role has no credible trade backing. There is no report from Variety, Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, DC Studios, James Gunn, or Murphy’s representatives supporting it.

His DC history is real. Murphy originally screen-tested for Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins before Christopher Nolan steered him toward Jonathan Crane, better known as Scarecrow. He returned for The Dark Knight Rises, recurring across Nolan’s trilogy. Murphy has said he feels he has already done the comic book villain, which hardly sounds like someone signaling a fresh franchise deal.
The fancasting machine keeps running. Murphy could make fascinating work of Atrocitus, whose mythology is built around rage, grief, and the Red Lantern Corps. Brainiac would give him something cerebral, while Vandal Savage would lean into his gift for controlled menace. Those are fancasts, not casting reports.
For now, Murphy’s actual slate is already busy enough without adding another cape-adjacent detour.
Cillian Murphy’s real next moves are already taking shape
Cillian Murphy's biggest prohject is A Quiet Place Part III. Variety confirmed that Murphy is returning as Emmett alongside Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe. Jack O’Connell, Jason Clarke and Katy O’Brian are joining the cast, with John Krasinski back to write, direct and produce. Paramount has set the sequel for July 30, 2027, and filming began in New York earlier this year.

Murphy is also heading back into another apocalypse. Danny Boyle recently said the third 28 Years Later film will feature “a lot of Cillian Murphy,” with Alex Garland having completed the screenplay. Murphy first returned as Jim in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, reconnecting him with the franchise that helped launch his international career.
There is prestige drama on the docket too. Murphy is starring opposite Daniel Craig in Damien Chazelle’s untitled prison drama, which entered production in 2026. That combination feels perfectly suited to the actor: franchise horror, filmmaker-driven drama, and projects that refuse to sit neatly in one lane.
