The cult-favorite ’90s animated series, Street Sharks, is gearing up for a comeback with a new project titled Blood Runs the Streets. The revival, which could reintroduce the franchise to longtime fans while also drawing in a new generation, is reportedly in the works for Netflix, as per an Instagram page, the90sguyz. That said, there is still no official update yet that the series will actually land on the streaming giant.
While there is a fan following of Street Sharks, it actually began as a Mattel toyline in the early ’90s, created to cash in on the action-figure boom sparked by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The animated series came later and existed mainly to push toy sales, wrapping a simple sci-fi story around four brothers transformed into humanoid sharks through a DNA experiment. The sharks in pants and the simple storyline were more than enough to keep the kids hooked to the cartoon.
Back in 2024, Mattel also introduced a new set of action figures to celebrate its 30th anniversary. While its animation revival remains up in the air, the series got a comic revival last year.
Street Sharks got a much deserving comic revival
One of the reasons behind the interest in the Street Sharks is how the show ended without the Shark boys getting a reunion with their father, Dr. Robert Bolton. After being transformed, the father and sons never got the chance to reunite. Fans who were upset over the abrupt end of the show ultimately saw new hope when the Street Sharks got a comic revival.
IDW, which is known for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, published a five-issue limited series. Written by Stephanie Williams and drawn by Ariel Medel, it was released in September of last year. Whether or not the Street Sharks revival actually lands on Netflix, it is quite clear that the franchise still has teeth.
